Is Tax Debt Impacting Your International Travel Plans?

Education & Training with KLSM CPA Firm, PLLC

KLSM CPA Firm empowers individuals and small businesses by providing accounting and tax solutions for financial success. We assist taxpayers with tax resolution matters including filing back taxes in Houston, TX, San Antonio TX, and elsewhere.

Are you a taxpayer that loves to travel? If so, here is another reason to get caught up on your back taxes. Did you know that if you have seriously delinquent tax debt the IRS can file a certification with the State Department to deny or revoke your United States passport for International Travel?

After the IRS certifies your tax debt with the State Department, the State Department is required to deny passport applications or renewals or revoke your current passport.

Here are few tips about the process:

  •        The IRS is required to notify you in writing when seriously delinquent tax debt is certified with the State Department (Be sure to open your mail!)
  •        Before denying a passport, the State Department will hold your application for 90 days to allow you to resolve certficiation issue, pay the tax debt or setup an installment agreement with the IRS.

If you or someone you know has an passport issue related to tax debt or any other tax issue, please contact me directly via email at

Thankfully no, it isn’t impacting me all that much because I’ve got things down to a science with how I travel with my husband and everything else. I’m very thankful. :)

Me neither. I like to travel freely and pay my taxes too.

Good afternoon Krystin Mitchell, CPA CFE ,

Wow..I just learned something. I never knew your foreign travel could be impacted by having tax debt. Glad I've never had to be concerned with that issue.
