Careful How And Where You Answer

By

Careful how you answer.

Careful talking in public spaces.

Many conversations are overheard in supermarket aisles, restaurants, elevators, and just about anywhere people gather.

Are you aware of who might be listening?

 Who's listening

Think about what is said in public, on the phone, in a text, in an email, in a blog,  or even in a comment.

Who is nearby and has access to what you say?

You could be on someone's speakerphone.

What if your message goes to an office or general voice mail?

What if your message goes to the wrong person?

Think about who's listening.

Think about who could listen or read your message.

How would you feel if ________ was listening?

You fill in that blank.

A few with access to your information might be:

Your seller

Your buyer

The co-op agent

A relative, an ex, or friend of one of the parties

A competitive buyer or agent

The Real Estate Commission

Your broker

The Media

The General Public

Don't say anything that you don't want everyone to hear.

You never know who might be listening.

How and where do you answer your phone?

I  also agree with Alan May who says:

"I have two applicable rules for this subject.

Don't say anything (in person or online) that you wouldn't be comfortable saying
1) ... in front of your mother.
2) ... in front of a judge."

Margaret, what I say privately, publicly to friends, relatives, clients and potential clients is the same... you get the real deal I do not have a different story for one... so if they over hear me in the Grocery Store it is OK... Endre

Talk about being overheard. Those Plexiglas-barriers found in banks make it difficult to whisper thus everyone knows how much money you will leave with. I used to work with a guy who made some fast Real Estate moves and if something came up he would literally "grab" my ear, cup it & speak in to it

Tom Bailey The most important thing is to be aware of what you are saying and where. Who else might be listening?

Margaret, there are things that I would say to my mother or to a judge under oath, that I really would not want everyone to hear! I would not be ashamed I said them, but still would not want everyone to hear

Tom Bailey And everything we say and hear is not for everyone!

There is plenty of personal information, shared with us, that is not to be repeated. This was learned from my days of being an RN. Patient confidentiality...now client confidentiality!

I've heard public conversations many times about people I know or at least know of.

You NEVER KNOW who is listening.

It can be very interesting the things people openly discuss.

Sharon Tara Interesting, dangerous, intriguing, embarrassing, and lots more things...depending on the subject discussed and who's listening.

I was scheduled to be interviewed and called a judge, an old friend, and asked him for advice. Among other things he said:
1. Do not tell a reporter anything that you would not want printed on the front page.
2. You have been asked to tell what you have learned from your career. Stick to facts and avoid opinions. You are a historian not a social commentator.
3. Be true to yourself and your own ideals. If you can't do this without saying something that will get you in trouble, shut up. Silence in response to a provocative question can be a telling answer. "No comment" may be as meaningful and a real answer.

Yes, it is wise to be careful what we say, and good to let people know when they are on speakerphone.

Hi Margaret:

You are so right on target here. It's pretty amazing what you hear people saying on the phone, in elevators, standing in line, etc. And don't forget to make sure you DID hang up that call on your SmartPhone after a conversation or when leaving a message before you are saying things the other party could hear.

In an unrelated vein I find it ironic that as careful as the medical community supposedly is about privacy that there really is none when people are checking in for appointments.

Jeff
