Searcy's first female barber Dianne Watson

Searcy's first female barber?

While sitting in the barber chair a few days ago, I noticed this framed advertisement on the wall.  I examined it more closely and saw the "Searcy's First female Barber" written under one of the pictures.  The ad was from approximately 1977 and I was in her barber chair.....as I have been each time I needed a haircut for many years!  Dianne Felt Watson is a great barber and has been in the business since first hired by Wyatt & Poole Barber Service.

Nosy me.....I had to ask what that was like.  She said it was hurtful when some people turned and walked out of the shop.  I said, "NO, they didn't!"  She said, "Yes, they did.  They said I was intruding into male territory and they didn't like it."  I guess that was an example of sexism which we are still trying to stop.

Dianne kept with her career and she has a full schedule of devoted clients!  She is shown in the closeup picture below.

As a Searcy Sleuth, I will have to admit to NOT knowing about Diane. Thank you, Barbara, for noticing and now writing about her, so we can all appreciate her and her breaking the "glass ceiling"....Diane you go, girl!

Come to think of it, I don't believe I can remember any female barbers in Sacramento when I was a kid.  In fact, I remember the early 1960s when male hair stylists began appearing.  They were often popular and trendy for the women.

Anita, I forgive the spelling wrong.  She is quite a lady and a great barber.

Myrl, she says that she started when the boys and girls had similar haircuts.  Boys shaggy like the Beatles and girls likewise.

Morning Barbara.

We have come a long way, with a long way to go.  I write about females who contributed to this Republic as well as different nations.  Pity,

I have a female barber here in Sunnyvale. I also had one 30 years ago here who rode a motorcycle to the shop.

My son and daughter have gone to the same woman hair sytlist who now  owns her own shop for 35 years.

Adriana D'Alessandria Raissinia  was 19 when when she started and my son was 15. My former wife, Martha, also went to her. That's how my son and daughter started. She is family!

Don, I think you have bragged on the skills of female barbers and how we can actually be happy they are in the business!

Thanks for the memories , what a great time I’m my life. Could not have had a better partner than Dean Poole. We all laughed and worked and enjoyed every coustomer to the fullest. We lost some due to their death and were honored to have helped with their final hair cut and style at the request of their family .Dean, Paul and myself had a ball every day.

James, I am glad you enjoyed the memories through the blog.  I got my hair cut many times at the old location across from the court house. I believe a Karen Holmes worked there also and that may have been who I first got haircuts from.  But she was not, according to the ad, the first female barber in Searcy.
