Do you have/need an exit strategy?

Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

In a recent conversation with a fellow Realtor, she was talking about her "Exit Strategy".... and I realized that I don't have one of those.

I have always felt that being a Realtor®, was somewhat akin to playing tennis.  It's one of those things you can do as long as your health holds up, right up to the end.  And that's the current "exit strategy" I have.

I've always planned on helping people buy and sell residential real estate as long as it's still fun, still financially viable and as long as my health allows.

"Retirement",  just doesn't hold any appeal for me.  I have no interest in sitting watching more television, playing golf every day, or even travel (which I love) I can only take so much.

I plan to work until the very last day possible.  Do you have an exit strategy?

Good morning Alan. I had a strategy but alas the best laid plans. Now I play it by ear which is itself something.

Hi Alan,

Unless you are planning to bundle your business and sell it, I'm not sure an exit strategy is needed. Most Realtors exit by simply not doing anything further. Past clients get the message from a lack of communication and just move on with someone else.

Good afternoon Alan May,

I think Barbara Todaro is a good example of staying in real estate unitizing an exit strategy that utilizes her talents and keep her in the ball game! Real estate is fortunately a field we can stay active in for as long as our health  and desire to remain active is positive!

Hi Alan May I had my exit strategy planned.... I stopped listing real estate....created a team.... branded the name.... turned it over to my daughter to run with it.... I do the marketing and collect a 20% referral fee on every listing....I charge 10% for all buyers....  I have no schedule and enjoy marketing....

Hi Alan yes I do have a financial exit plan which we've been working on for years. As far as not selling homes anymore?  I still enjoy doing so and will keep doing so until I'm ready to move into next phase of plan. At that point I will close down my shop and align with another firm as associate broker. If I'm traveling (which is part of the plan) than I will refer my clients out to a few agents I've known for years within the same firm. Referrals can go on for years and years.  Good luck creating your exit plan.

Hi Alan- that's the beauty of what you do. Barbara Todaro is a good example of how to back out without leaving money on the table.

We are in the transition process.  Our granddaughter, is currently in the process of stepping up and taking up the slack.  We can take our time and work it out.
