Home Improvement Projects You Must Avoid

Just because you have the money to pursue various home improvement projects does not mean that you should go and do it. Sometimes, less is more. The projects that you think would increase the overall value of your home may turn out detrimental in the long run. So if you are planning to move in two or three years, do not invest in projects that won’t increase the resale value of your current household.

Here are some low-value but expensive home improvement projects that you must avoid (if you do plan to sell your home in the near future):

In-Ground Swimming Pools
Installing a pool may initially appear to be a brilliant idea, but the truth is, they make your house that harder to sell. Yes, they may appear appealing for the luxurious ones but most people, especially those with small families, do not want to buy a house with a pool. And not making your house for sale appealing to this demographic will drastically reduce the number of potential buyers.

High-End Gourmet Kitchens
It is common nowadays for people to prioritize their kitchens when they are in the talks of home improvement. After all, who would not want top-of-the-line equipment and accessories on their beloved kitchen? However beautiful and luxurious it may appear to be, people aren’t entirely keen on purchasing a home that has intricate items on their kitchen. If you do plan on remodeling this part of your house, opt-in for small but effective changes instead.

Room Additions
The home improvement of adding another room can easily cost you thousands of dollars. Not only that, it tends towards not being able to return the investment people put into it. And that is why most budget-minded buyers stray as far away as possible from it. They firmly believe that the risk greatly outweighs the profit, and that is certainly not something you should put your foot on. More especially if you are still relatively new in the business of selling homes.

Yes, this is good advice. Unless you want those items yourself, it's better not to do these things.

Good morning Tamra. That high end kitchen may serve your ego but leave money on the table! Enjoy your day!

Hi Tamra, Thanks for sharing these great tips.  Many improvements may not be cost effective if you are planning a move in the near future.
