6 basic tips on how to paint a room

Painting a room in your house is a quick easy way to make a change. If you're thinking of painting a room in your house here are 6 great tips:

  1. How much paint should I buy? The general rule is that one gallon will cover about 400 square feet. For each wall, calculate width x height. For each length of trim, calculate length x .5 feet. Plan on doing two coats for the room.
  2. Prepare the surfaces! This is key to a great finished job.
  3. Sequence: Do the ceiling first, then the walls, then the trim.
  4. Mix the paint: If you’re using more than one gallon of paint, mix them in a five-gallon bucket to assure color consistency.
  5. Ceiling: Use a brush to do the edges first, then use a roller to do the rest. Don’t overload the roller. Work in four-foot sections. To avoid splatter, don’t roll too fast. When the ceiling is dry, use painter’s tape on the edges to get ready to do the walls.
  6. Walls: Again, use a brush to do the edges first, then use a roller to do the rest. When the walls are dry, use painter’s tape on the edges to get ready for the trim.

Oh, great tips, Pat! I can tell you, I have sworn off of painting - I always think it will be a little job...it turns out to test my sanity each and every time! I'm too much of a perfectionist when I'm doing it, that's for sure!

Debe,

I know the feeling it does pay to hire a professional; especially, if you don't like it.
