September 11, 2001 We Will Not Forget!

Mortgage and Lending with George Souto NMLS #65149 FHA, CHFA, VA Mortgages NMLS #65149

September 11, 2001 We Will Not Forget!  9/11 will Always Be In Our Hearts, and each of us has our own special reason why that day will always be a day we will never forget.  Today is a day of not only remembering the vicious attack on our country eightteen years ago, but also a day to honor those who lost there lives.  It is also a day for us to reflect on the memories, and thoughts which went through our mines as the events of September 11, 2001 unfolded.

I have shared what I remember most about 9/11 before, and have made a commitment to share this memory each and every year on September 11, so today I am fullfilling that commitment with this blog.

Below is a special memory of that day, it is an event which hit close to home and will forever live in my heart and mind.

Many innocent people lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including one whom I personally knew.  His son and my youngest son grew up playing baseball together, so I use to see him all the time.  On September 11, 2001 he lost his life trying to assist those he worked with out of one of the twin towers.  Just before he lost his life he was on the cell phone with his oldest son.  His son pleaded with him to just leave the building, but that was not the type of man he was, he would not leave others behind.  As his son continued to plead with him the phone went silent.  On that day, September 11, 2001, he lost his life helping to save the life of others.  That is my memory of September 11, 2001.  A memory which I will not only never forget, but one which will always be on my heart.

The South Fire District Fire Department in Middletown, CT was fortunate to obtain one of the beams from one of the World Trade Center Towers in 2011, and erected a memorial in remembrance of those who lost their life on 9/11/01.  The first picture below is of the beam and original memorial erected in 2011.

Five years ago through efforts of The South Fire District Fire Department money was raise, and donations were made by residents of Middletown and surrounding towns to landscape and pave the area around the 9/11 beam.  My family and I purchased the paver in the picture above in remembrance of my friend, and all who lost their lives on September 11, 2001

I think The South Fire District Fire Department did an outstanding job on the 9/11 memorial which is proudly displayed next to the South Fire District Fire Department.  The 9/11 memorial below will stand in remembrance of the innocent people who lost their lives on September 11, 2001 for many years to come.  I am proud my family's name will be a part of this memorial for as long as it stands.  September 11, 2001 Never, Never Forget all those who lost their lives.

Good evening George Souto ,

I'm so glad that you continue to post each year including your thoughts, words and pictures from your initial post. It still seems unreal to think what happened on our soil when our country was viciously attacked on September 11, 2001. We must never forget and honor those who lost their lives, the first responders and pay tribute to their heroic efforts.

I'm sure this has been on your mind and heart all day today.  That one tragic series of events are forever etched in all of our minds and hearts.  Each one of us remembers exactly what we were doing that morning even if we did not have anyone or know anyone that was involved in it.  It was an attach on our nation and as such, an attack on each one.  Thank you for the touching post... so well done.  The memorial and the pavers are are something to be proud to have been a part of.

We won’t ever forget. Life is short and it’s our job to make a beautiful life for one another. If there’s anything we can rent from tragedy, it’s that.

Rather hard to believe it’s been 18 years but it has and now we are politicizing that day and some are trying to diminish it . What a mess we are

For my generation it was the assassination of John Kennedy that is forever seared in our minds. September 11 will always be that kind of day for everyone alive at that time, but I see that for my children, it's their Kennedy assassination.

My 34-year old son went to church yesterday - he hasn't done that in many years.

We had severe weakness in our defense systems until this happened. To use our airplanes as missiles to destroy select targets simultaneously using box cutters to overpower & subdue persons boggles the mind for its diabolical simplicity/brilliancy. Let us never be caught asleep again thus the Homeland Security was created. Now we can defend within our borders as well as without and rain hell on anyone who makes a move on the United States

I was originally going to be in the WTC for 2 different reasons that day- both would have meant my chances of survival were near zero. Instead, I was at my firm's largest client, headquarters for JP Morgan Chase in midtown just a few feet from the main trading floor. Our first indications of a problem were the frenzied and scared calls from the squawk boxes from brokers at Cantor Fitzgerald knowing there was a problem but not knowing how bad. I started seeing minor headlines on my news feed (we trained trading staff on the trading systems) such as "Fire at WTC"- not knowing how signficant this was.  It soon became obvious and there were soon multiple reports of bombs all over the city including Grand Central (we were 2 blocks from there) and panic set in.  I am so happy the press never got a hold of the conversations with Cantor's people on the squawk boxes- which is what haunts me the most today. I called a friend who wasn't in the city that day. Her father happened to manage NYU's blood center- and it was my call to his daughter that was their first alert of a problem.

We were advised to remain in place for awhile to not panic- but everyone on the trading floors had live news feeds from every major news source at their desks- with new headlines scrolling by every second- many indicating the panic throughout the city.

I was lucky that day- as one of the reasons to be in the WTC that day would have put me in the risk management conference that was being held at Windows on the World on the top floor. Alternatively- I nearly wound up at potential new client site on the 86th floor of one of the towers- and for the first time, I was happy our quote was too expensive for the client to consider us for the project.

Every 9/11 is a sad day for me- but it has gotten worse in the last few years as racial intolerance, bigotry, anti-semitism and general overall hate has increased signficantly. The Emma Lazarus poem was not just literature- but a way of life and a mindset for generations. As I made it home (in the suburbs at that time) - I wrapped yellow ribbons of peace around the rails of our staircases and walkways in our compex- side by side with a muslim family who was just as heart broken that day as I was. While we briefly came together as one- America has begun to lose it's way in the last few years and this is something that makes the 9/11 anniversary even more difficult.

Hi George, it is certainly one of those days we will never forget where we were and what we were doing. One of those days where you are watching the event unfold and asking yourself if it's really true. To the men and women who rushed in to help and those who were lost, we will never forget them.
