An Appreciation Of Accounting

Of All Kinds

An Appreciation Of Accounting Of All Kinds  It may seem a little odd but I've been called worse than odd at times.  I digress.  I didn't expect to find an appropriate quote from a British composer when I went on a search for some pithy words on the subject of accounting.  But that is what happened when I found the following quote by the man who has been called the Father of the New Complexity movement in music.

Not a typical accounting quote but maybe that combines the best of the subject for me.  Accounting really is much more than the sum of all numbers(or all words in a post) when looking for the right balance.  Some unexpected words may be in order:

I suppose that the scope and implications of such forces

have rendered my personal accounting ritual pretty much obsolete.

That's how things sometime go.

                                                               Brian Fenneyhough

Some unexpected words on what many believe to be a rather standard subject.  Rather cut-and-dry.  To me life is about thinking about all sorts of things.  Beyond that, actually.  Pondering is a part of it.  Examining.  Studying. Reflecting.  And yes, analyzing.  Lots of other things too.  It really goes beyond the numbers.

I remember that day when I first walked into an accounting class.   My idea of what was being taught turned out to be different.  For me.  Was that the intention?  There was obviously the study of accounting but there was more.  At least for me.

While I didn't pursue accounting in life, there is an element of it that came along in the balance sheet of life.   Parts of education have a habit of doing that.    It goes beyond credits and debits.

Michael, you would not have been a happy accountant. While numbers can be creative...rarely in accounting.

Hi Michael- while math was always easy for me, I never took an accounting course. I do appreciate those who work with numbers, juggling them until they balance.

James Dray - do they like it?  Every day?  I hope they find joy on some level.

Sally K. & David L. Hanson - I will need to ponder about your comment.

Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400 - I can't think of myself in the role of accounting - at least not full-time...

Nina Hollander - finding the parts that "fit" make life happen.  That's how I see it.

Wayne Martin - coffee definitely seems to fuel you.  Superpower?  Maybe.

Barbara Todaro - I admit to being a bit surprised by your comment as an outsider who knows you only from what you have shared here - it seems to be that you are well-balanced.

Sheila Anderson - I like the quote too.

Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - that description seems pretty stereotypical maybe even comical.

Alexandra Ron and Alexandra Seigel - "figures don't lie but liars figure" comes to mind.  I am not exactly sure why.  Well, not exactly.

Brian England - take your time on returning that FULL report.  Can we see it by tomorrow morning?

Jeffrey DiMuria 321.223.6253 Waves Realty  - not even those extra fancy numeral sevens?

Kathy Streib  - well you have juggled a bit yourself.  That sofa over there and moving that chair just a bit to the right.  No..just a smidge...  Seems like accounting-speak to me.

Life does go well beyond the numbers - they may be at the 'root' of things but, I think your British composer's final words "sum" it up well, Michael,

"That's how things sometimes go."

Numbers are really everywhere - cooking, carpentry, design, you name it. And, I must admit, I love balancing our accounts - Bernie not so much. There is something so cathartic about the focus of working with numbers.

Michael Jacobs - Here's a quote for you: "The problem is not that this optimistic view is wrong. By economic accounting, the optimistic is mostly right." ---anonymous

After working as a Bookkeeper for five summer years at Wyonegonic Camps, I learned you don't have to be a rocket scientist to do accounting and balance the books but you have to be honest, have integrity, and learn how to master the financial formulas. When you can't figure things out, don't fudge - it catches up to you and the finger knows where to point.

I can't imagine when "fudging" might be the preferred plan when it comes to anything let alone accounting, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP .  Honesty is always a good "strategy" even for rocket science.

Michael Jacobs - I could never fudge. I'm the first to admit mistakes. The greatest compliment I received from my former boss in Corporate America is that I was the only employee she ever had that was honest and found solutions to problems and informed her when I made a mistake and made corrections. Honesty truly is the best policy.

Michael, I initially went to school to be an accountant, but decided sitting behind a desk swimming in numbers all day was not for me.

I think my favorite class in college was accounting. I did billing for a legal office for a few years and enjoyed that too. I find balancing the checkbook to be relaxing. Something about putting everything in order...that stager mind, you know. LOL
