What You Post on Social Media can Destroy a Career Before it Starts!

Real Estate Broker/Owner with Mike McCann - Broker, Mach1 Realty Farm & Commercial Land Broker-Auctioneer Serving Nebraska

It was just another phone call with a prefix I did not recognize.  Not unusual since we take our cell numbers with us when we move.  I was just pulling into town and was in moderate traffic.    "Probably another telemarketer", I thought, "or a bot hangup".

Gotta answer it though...right? Could be the next big deal!  That has actually happened more than once.

"Good Afternoon, this is Mike McCann ... Mach1 Realty",  and hallelujah... there was a voice on the other end.

This person identified them-self and quickly asked about hanging their real estate license with my company.

(I am in the process of growing the company with rural agents who will work the farm and ag land markets.) Hint hint

We chatted for a while and we talked about this person's goals and Mach1 Realty company goals.  We came to the quick conclusion that this person wanted to join a company that sells homes in town through the MLS and does not want to do ag land.

I gave them the name of a great Broker who, it turns out, they had already talked with and had gotten my name from.

Although I do not care if my agents sell houses in an MLS town, we do not belong to the MLS...(on purpose but that is a story for another time)...which makes it hard to work with home buyers and sellers in the larger towns...fair enough.

Back to the original headline: I did a little due diligence on this individual when I got back to my computer mainly because I had referred the person on without knowing anything about them.

It was easy to search for the individual because of a few comments they made plus I had their number and you can search via phone number on the State Commission website.

I confirmed it was the right person. And then went to social media...which is how I usually vet a person.

What I saw on social media can only be described as voyeurism and something I had never seen before and did not know even existed. But the first photo and accompanying comment thread absolutely made me very confused and instantly a red flag went up. There were numerous photos and comments from this person and others on their FB page including specific requests for certain types of photos and private messages. I felt very uncomfortable which is unusual for me.

I thought maybe I was over reacting and asked my wife her thoughts...she was as puzzled as I was.

I personally do not care what a person does behind closed doors as long as it is not illegal and I believe what I saw was legal...but very strange.

I do however, strongly care what a person does publicly that can adversely impact my family, friends, work life, and my company. The FB page was open to the public.   Bad, Bad, Bad idea.  It had photos that this person probably thinks are innocent but if I perceive them as bad...I guarantee you I am way more open and understanding than 90% of my potential customers. That is not who I want to have working for me.

We all walk a fine line with social media as we all control what others perceive of us. But if you do not own the company...what you think is okay may not fly with the owner or with the person hiring...which in this case...is both.

Until next time...remember what you post online can come back to hurt you in the future...and destroy a career before it gets started!!

Hi Michael Jacobs    I agree.  And when you have a 2nd business that you work...that can also send up red flags.  It is truly a fine line we walk and most of us fall off once in a while.  Thanks for stopping by.

I worry about our young people who put their lives of FB and other places.  Once on the world wide web, you can't take it back!  Very wise to vet this person!

Hi 1~Judi Barrett ...Thanks for stopping by!  I think court records are good. I also check out where they live and how they live.  It is hard to council folks to clean up and repair/replace if you are not very clean yourself and everything is broken.

HI Shirley Coomer I am guilty of probably putting too much out there myself.  But everything I do put out there I would not be afraid to show my wife or our local Priest,  or others I am trying to have as clients and customers.  Thanks for stopping by!!

I'd definitely suggest this individual "clean up" his social media content, and be sure to restrict his questionable antics in the future. It's a good idea for all of us to look at our content to see if certain posts were meant for private eyes...

Hi Mike it's so important to vet people - especially those wanting to work for you. Folks who don't understand or even think about how their presenting themselves  online or how they are perceived by others are going to wish they had later.

Home is where the hearth is.

Facebook has been known to sink careers, as well as college careers, before they've started.

That ubiquitous Red Solo cup figures prominently in many of those.

It's wise to be circumspect about what you post online, because what you post on the internet can be forever.

Hi  Laura... Thanks for stopping by!  I agree ...there is a photo of me I have tried to get removed for over five years and have not been successful.  It is not even me...just my name and that persons name from the local paper from almost 10 years ago.

Hi Toby Barnett I think you have a new one: IRM - improper reputation management.   Thanks for stopping by and sharing your IRM thought!!

Online reputation and "saying something online" and how it can come back to haunt the person something we talk to with the kids a lot. Its astonishing that many feel that jokes or what is typed is somehow different than saying it face-to-face and should be treated different.

WHEN WILL PEOPLE LEARN?? It seems I come across stories like this all the time - how is it possible?

I'm wondering - did you tell him how you felt about what he posted?

Good evening Mike McCann - Nebraska Farm Land Broker ,

Its such a shame that so many people just don't understand EVERYONE is reading what they post. A good rule of thumb..if your mom wouldn't like it and you wouldn't want her to read it it's probably not appropriate! LOL!

Hi Mike- I remember when Facebook first came on the scene and we were warning our children about what they posted for fear their college antics would not be seen in a good light by future employers.

Mike, very relevant post.  We are all doing more vetting to make sure people are who they say they are and their social media confirms or negates that image.  Like Kathy Streib, remember when college graduates were editing their Facebook accounts when entering the job market.
