Beyond the box

If we think of cardboard at all, it's usually thought of as superfluous, something to send to recycling (as in all those boxes from Amazon purchases.) Sometimes we can re-use packing boxes, sharing from one household who has moved into their home with another just starting their moving process. Kids and pets make good use of some of the cardboard.

However, creative minds think "beyond the box" and have turned cardboard into delightful pieces of art. Some of my favorites include pieces from an exhibit at the Exploratorium including these houses and an entire town:

Kathy Streib - I thought the same thing--amazing minds to come up with these cardboard works of art. I've seen some art from book pages--very clever, too.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - I lead some friends on a hike around the Presidio today; toward the end of the hike, after lunch, we stopped in the Lodge at the Presidio and looked at all the art of the common room walls -- including the cardboard soldier (who makes me think of Abraham Lincoln.)

Oh, that is so cool to see in person, I am sure, Lottie. The intriguing minds of these artists knows no bounds - even with cardboard boxes!

But, our cats sure do, don't they?! Mine never misses exploring one left on the floor for more than 3 minutes!

Cats and little kids, too, Debe Maxwell, CRS - many years ago, as I was packing up our household preparing to move, I "lost" my 3 year old in our little 2-bedroom house; found her curled up asleep in an empty moving box!

Hi Lottie:

What a great idea - so creative and clever! Far beyond my artistic capabilities.

LOL! Beyond mine, too, Jeff Dowler, CRS - I don't even think creatively like these artists do.

Hello Lynn B. Friedman - that art work puts a whole new spin on "tiny houses"

Sally K. & David L. Hanson - cats, kids and cardboard boxes just naturally go together.

I have been a huge advocate of recycling since I was in high school. Co-mingled recycling boosted participants but contamination ruined the business and China shut us down. RE-using is the only answer Lottie Kendall

I watched my youngest grandson, he's four, play with a big box for nearly 4 hours. It was a car, a spaceship, a cabin, and at one time, held the small family dog captive for a few minutes.  The tiny house village is so cool, next time we're in the area, the Exploratorium is on my list.

Thanks for sharing some cardboard art.

A simple box can occupy a child or pet better than a toy.

Paul S. Henderson, REALTOR®, CRS - a side effect of all the online ordering we consumers do is a proliferation of cardboard; it's becoming quite a problem.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD - a simple cardboard box can really stimulate ideas--in play like your grandson, or to wax and careen down the dried summer grasses on a California hillside (my favorite when I was young.)

Lottie Kendall - I wish I would have taken a photo of a bear in Montana. It was made out of cardboard! The bear was enormous! It appears there are many uses for cardboard yet to be discovered by creative minds.

This is a great post. I enjoyed reading it very much and seeing the cardboard houses! There's a lot of imagination that can come up with interesting art projects! And cardboard is so much easier on the environment than plastic.

I would LOVE to see the cardboard bear art you saw in Montana, Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP . When I posted this, I had issues with the photo handler and couldn't post one of my favorites, this handsome fellow adorning a wall in the Lodge at the Presidio.

Lottie Kendall - WOW! that cardboard fellow is really handsome. Whoever created him is exceptionally talented.

I'm going to see if Kat Palmiotti can read this post and perhaps if she has time to take a photo of that bear on the staircase at the Flathead Community College and post it here on ActiveRain.  Every time I passed it, I said I was going to do it, but never did.

Lesson learned! Never put off to tomorrow what you can do today. By the way, I just received a text from my daughter. Unbeknown to her about your post or the cardboard bear, she shared a stork that she made out of cardboard for her friend who is expecting. Cardboard must be the new creative thing!!!!

Thanks for sharing this guy Lottie! I think he'd look perfect for a County Fair too!

"CleanFiber, formerly known as UltraCell Insulation, makes high performance building insulation from recycled corrugated cardboard. Their competitors make cellulose insulation from recycled newsprint, but are facing rapidly dwindling supplies as readers turn online. In contrast, their unique patented and proven process allows them to manufacture a superior product from corrugated cardboard at a lower cost than conventional cellulose insulation."
