A cultural and historic feature, the Pillars of God, is a temple built by one man, A.K Mozumdar, who was a spiritual teacher with a dream of building a temple where people of all religious faiths could come together and worship. Construction of the temple began with an adjoining camp, but never actually completed before his death.
A.K Mozumdar's friend and architect, William P. Lodge designed the temple. While it was never completed because of A.K.'s death, there is a drawing of how the interior was to be finished. Beautiful murals were to be completed throughout the temple depicting the life of Jesus.
When A.K. Mozumdar was teaching, you could always find large crowds present at the camp. Musical numbers by a chorus were performed during summertime sessions and a beautiful swimming pool was available for students. With beautiful views of the Mojave Desert in the background, the Pillars of God was one of the most striking features in Crestline.
While the temple is not open to the public, many are often found exploring the ruins, even though not recommended because it is private property. The temple sits in a very dark and secluded area with a chained gate prohibiting access. If you are a curious soul wanting to take a peek, you can stay within the law and see the golden dome and top of the temple from the road. The good news is that in 2018 the private owners of this historical site offered tours of the camp on the first Sunday of the month during the spring and summer months. We are not sure if they will continue this in the upcoming years, but you can contact the Crestline Chamber of Commerce for more information.
There is a beautiful testimony written by David R. Knudson, that were excerpted from his autobiography. To read how a teenagers discovery of Mozumdar's writings transformed his life CLICK HERE
