Branding Moment: Well Read Wine Label--Organic Wine

We have become a nation that reads labels and are concerned about the content of what we eat or drink, which is one the reasons that the production of organic wines is growing in California, and in Europe.   Many of the vineyards in France and Italy have been organic since Roman times,(before any one knew what organic meant). and just never changed.

This wine label caught our attention while shopping at Trader Joe's in Santa Barbara. This wine is made exclusively for Trader Joe's by Orleans Hills Winery, which specializes in producing wines from organic vineyards.   We smiled at the clever play on words, and the storybook style label.

We did not buy it. The sentence, contains no detectable sulfites, left me wondering whether there are still sulfites, it just that they are undetectable.  What does that mean?  I felt that this statement defeated the brand's organic position.

What do you think?

Candice A. Donofrio Thank you for the feature.  Actually, there is a rise among the SB county wines that are organically produces with NO sulfites, and the same with Napa.

One can have a CYA on the back label, but certainly not in your face, perhaps that was the unintended result of a  marketing tactic!  Cheers!  A

Hi Ron and Alexandra- well the label itself had a bit of whimsy to it but the "contains no detectable sulfites" makes me ask "what, did you hide them from us?"

This is why I like to consume wine in Italy and Israel. It is home grown and not meant for export. Next week starts Spain and Portugal for more of the same.

Joe Pryor Both Spain and Portugal have great wines.  I am sure you are going to have a blast.  I remember having some wonderful tapas in Spain particularly of the seafood variety...Bon Voyage!  A

While the label didn't provide much insight into how "organic" it really was, I still like the whimsical apperance of it.

Hi Ron and Alexandra Seigel . First, glad to know that Trader Joe's has something that does not have their label on it.  In Florida, Trader Joe's is super popular. Regarding the wine, thought that sulfites were mandatory when imported and added into wines in the United States to prevent it from turning into vinegar. I think the wine company is "trying" to be honest as most companies don't have to report added ingredients if they fall under a certain percentage. I do read every label and  if I don't understand something, I call the company. I believe in truth in advertising and companies that operate with integrity. It's getting to be a rarity.

Janice Zaltman we are old time fans of Trader Joe's.  We shopped at the first LA store, and listened to Jo Polone on the radio with his ads.  I think you are right that they were trying to be honest. It is the execution that failed as it left doubts. I am aware  of the use of sulfites, and the reason for them.  I have walked many a vineyard when we lived in Napa with the vineyard managers, and the sulfites are not applied with a heavy hand anymore.  It would have been much better to put that statement on the back label than up front..  You still have to disclose and they do.  The question of detectable gives one pause to think and doubt.  We are the biggest TJ fans, we were their best customer when we lived in Napa driving 30 minutes out of Napa to shop, and were delighted when they opened in Sooma another 30 mns.  The year before we moved to Santa Barbara, they opened in Napa....I was illustrating that one has to be careful how they place their words and where they  place them in a branding and differentiating situation.  A

It's so sad that we HAVE to read labels and can't trust what is written.  As our 72 million boomers age, we all have this or that to be concerned with, and rightly so.  Too long ago we started experiencing produce ripening on trucks instead of from farms.  Ugh - my soapbox!  Great point - read the fine print!
