Walter Henry

Managing Real Estate Broker with Fathom Realty PB00068179

Walter Henry Deubener was born in Saint Paul, Minnesota back in 1885/87, the records I found indicate either date. In any respect, I could not find who his parents were, where he attended school, if he graduated or much of anything about him until the early 1900’s. By then he was married to Lydia.

He and his wife owned and operated a grocery store. He noticed something that would rewrite history and of course his soon to be fortune. He and Lydia made 50 of his inventions selling them for $0.05 per item. In 1927, they applied for a patent, it was issued in 1929 # 1713747. With their fortune, they sold the store and lived off the royalties inviting all of the local people from Lake Gearge, Minnesota during the summer to their estate. They would serve hot dogs, hamburgers and cut watermelons on a daily basis.

What you may not know about Walter is that he invented was the first shopping bag. He took an ordinary paper sack, punched holes hear the top and attached strings to it. Someone had to come up with the idea, now you know who it was. He died in 19080, he was 93.

Your day is worthwhile when you make someone smile, so give the free gift of a smile today

Hi James... Another every-day item in our lives that we probably never give any thought to as to who first came up with the idea.

Good morning again James. What a great story. I am taken by the ideas some have and how they change the way we all behave.

Just think of how that early shopping bag has evolved, and how many variations. And everyone uses them in one form or another.

Interesting, I guess if he was 93 he took 87 as his year of birth...
