Ask An Ambassador: What's Your Priority?

Priorities can change.  That's Life.

What's important today may be meaningless tomorrow, and thus it goes.

When we first joined ActiveRain many moons ago, this was a far different community (don't worry, I'm not about to go old guy get offa my lawn!!! here...although AARP keeps mailing me reminders that I'm eligible).

When we first joined I didn't really know how to blog for business, so most of my activity here was in the "social" category.  Blog posts that didn't have a prayer of getting a customer call, lots of reading and lots of comments left.  I'd max out my points on a daily and weekly basis.

Bob, Kerrie and Brad were doing their best to teach what we needed to know to be successful at blogging, and keep it fun at the same time.  It wasn't unusual for posts to get "hijacked" and comment strings could get pretty lengthy.  And it wasn't all milk and honey, the site was down frequently and today's tech issues are pretty minor in comparison to years back.

Now if you look for the faces from "the old days", there aren't many left.  Management has changed a few times, staffing has changed, and so has the membership.

Why?

Some agents left the business.

Some moved to their own Wordpress site and never came back.

Some decided blogging didn't work and just quit.

Some went off to Facebook and Instagram and YouTube.

Some realize this takes more work then they thought.

And some realize participation in the community takes too much time away from doing other things they love.

There's a whole host of reasons the faces are different.

For the most part, it comes down to priorities.  Is this something you love to do?

We're all strapped for time (says the guy with a dual career, 15 cats, 4 Chihuahuas and 7 beehives), so we each have to decide what takes priority for our time, and that means for some members ActiveRain activities are VERY low on the list.  I get that.

For me, a daily dose of AR is still a priority, but not in the same way as it used to be.

My highest priority each day is getting a blog post written.  Blog posts directed to the consumer are the most likely action here to bring me a good home buyer or home seller call.

Secondary priority is cruising through the Q&A section to see if there's anything quick I can help with.

Third priority is responding to comments left on my post.

And bringing up the rear as each day's time allows is reading posts by others and leaving comments.  I know this might be an ActiveRain faux pas, but I don't feel it mandatory to leave a comment on a post for every comment left on mine.  That probably means fewer comments left on my own posts, and I'm okay with that.  It's the trade-off I've had to make to manage the other priorities in my life.

And that's part of the beauty of ActiveRain.  Each of us can choose our own path.  Be here a little, be here a lot, or anything in between.  Whatever priority you want, the community will be here.

Blog for fun, blog for business, mix it up.  It's all your choice.

Until next Tuesday, just Ask An Ambassador if you need help,

Hello Bill(and Liz too) - ActiveRain offers many examples that change occurs(and at times when we don't even notice).   Priorities definitely fall into that category as well.

They do.  How I participate here today may be different in the years following.  Needs evolve and we adapt.

Thank you for your straightforward honest post, as always. This still is a unique vibrant community that I hope will continue for a long time. Yes, our priorities change and life changes so frequently.  The path is constantly moving in many directions. Let's keep moving forward positively. 5 quiet dogs, right.

I expect AR to exist for plenty more years.  The catalog of people is too valuable for Ben's enterprises to just pull the plug.

And sometimes the dogs ARE quiet :)

Home is where the hearth is.

You scared me, man.  You're a fixture, here.

It's certainly true, AR isn't the place it was in the Jurrasic period, when you and I first signed-on.  Community has changed, and morphed.  The "Feature" isn't nearly as exciting as it used to be.

But there's still plenty of value here... you may just have to work a little harder to find it.

Nope, Features (for the most part) carry very little more weight than a "regular" post.  I get the whys of that, and I can live with that too.

There is plenty of value here.  The relationships are still here (and on Facebook) and in person when I'm lucky enough to cross paths with another Rainer.

No reason for me to stop coming here until the day arrives that my priorities have a reason to change too.  I don't anticipate that day anytime soon, still lots of fun and lots of work to do.

Good morning Bill. Priorities change daily. For some it's the same old routine and for others new opportunities arise. To each there own. Enjoy your day!

It's a daily shifting of tasks.  I make sure I get a post done, although it might be 11 p.m. when I get to it.

There is one thing that remains the same. That I control my blogging destiny. If I dont blog, no one wil see it. Spending a little time to write a blog is time well spent. I must say when i have more time, i may write 2,3 or 4 blogs ahead for thse days it is non stop. But my blog is an ad. It goes ot world wide waiting for someone to see. Of course posting the link on social media helps people find it. But it only takes 1 new person to see and hire me to make it all worth while. I am still getting new clients from my blog. Using key words as i write helps it be found in searches. THEN of course there is the time wel spent here to socialize, but to learn, share and be entertained. It is a nice break from my hectic day to stop by AR.

We're pretty much aligned on why this is a priority for me.  Between posts here and my WP site IDX pages, at least half my business is from those efforts.  Things I wrote years ago still bring me calls.  More posts, more digital breadcrumbs.  And I find the writing is a nice change of pace from my engineering work too.

Hey Bill change happens and goes on and on just like priorities.  Mine certainly have changed this past few years and I'm quite happy about the results. Looking back to the wild west rain days was fun......expecially the hijacked posts etc. I never knew what to expect my first year or two in the rain and it was all fun and a HUGE learning curve for me and my company.

I like the results too.  More business opportunities from callers that have basically decided to hire me before they call.  The beauty of niches :)

The blogging is a lot of fun for me.  Cathartic almost.  It IS time-consuming and you can get as involved as any other posting medium on social media so you have to be careful.

I have been VERY pleased to see many of my posts show up on search engine results and they come up more with AR than FB (minimum on that count to Zero) and YouTube is also surprising.  The photos of the articles I write here are showing very well, better than the actual post will show in SE results.

Love the camaraderie and have learned a LOT.  Although I am not into the motivational side of things, it is important and helpful!!

John, That's part of the appeal for me.  My engineering job and this blogging thing are entirely different exercises of brain power.  And it is nice to see the placements on page 1.  Lots of great people here and I enjoy the interactions, although some of that has transferred more to Facebook than here.

I still log on every day to see what's going on. I don't write as many posts as I used to but that's because I've written about every local thing I could possibly think of! But it's still my first choice to post something interesting.

I keep finding things, but 7 of my 30 monthly days are taken up by market reports and another 4 are Ask An Ambassador posts, so I only have to create for the other half of the month.

Our priorities do change over time as we all evolve.  This is still a great place to lead and share!  The beauty is we can do as much or as little as our schedule and desires dictate!  Thanks for sharing!

My outside demands need to back off - because I like posting here daily and simply haven't found the time to be consistent with it for the past few months.  Lately I've felt fortunate to get my client work done without missing any deadlines, write a post every several days, and get over here to read and comment now and then.

Good afternoon Liz and Bill Spear ,

Ahh..times have changed, priorities have changed and will continue to change and evolve. We can each choose our own path and in some cases our path is chosen for us but AR is important, its like a mini class every day..just can't devote the time right now I'd like to.

Sep 19, 2019 02:36 PM

You've got bigger priorities to handle than this one.  Take your time and do what you need to do, AR can wait.

Liz and Bill Spear I know it is all about priorities ... and every day bring with it new challenges.  I seem to get caught reading the posts and then reading all the comments ... and then stopping by Q&A to see if there are any Q's I can contribute to. Next thing I know, I have surpassed the time I meant to spend due to "other respoinsibilities" and another day has passed with me not writing a blog. Can you give me some advise on this? Should I just concentrate my time to write a blog and not read posts and contribute my comments? Let me know your thoughts on this. Perplexed

Sep 19, 2019 07:38 PM
Liz and Bill Spear

It's a dilemma.  Make blogging too much like work and it gets tiresome.  And reading posts may spark an idea to implement to help your business.  Being social may help someone remember to call you when they've got a WI referral.

But being an engineer, I know of all the activities I can do here, the MOST likely to bring me business is to write another consumer directed post with specific information they won't find elsewhere (e.g. tonight was about 3 new construction patio home communities close to taking orders).  I want to be at the end of a Google search query and my best shot at that isn't a comment or a Q&A response.

That said, a typical blog post takes me 20-30 minutes (and sometimes more to write), and I typically won't start one unless I know I can type start to finish in one sitting.  So it's those shorter time slots I use to hit the Q&A section or read a post or two and comment.  I typically will not read all the comments unless it's a topic that I'm trying to learn something more about.

It's what works for me, but as they say, your mileage may vary :)
