Architects in the 50's and 60's offered something efficient, even utilitarian, for a burgeoning populace that was headed west in search of temperate climate, and for a little more land. The economy was booming, and Californians started businesses in specialty agriculture, oil, tourism, shipping, film, and after 1940 advanced technology such as aerospace and electronics. Rambling, open floorplans, no attics or basements, a carport rather than a garage, were de riguerer. The styles were beautiful in their simplicity. Blessed with walls of glass that relished the California sunshine, and the confidence in the exposed posts and beams, they have become only more popular as time goes by. The majority of the homes that we now call mid-century modern, comprised planned communities, and we see an entire neighborhood of Eichler, or Cliff May homes. Others were commissioned one at a time, for large plots of land in custom neighborhoods.
For Sale: Classic Mid-Century Modern in Old Agoura Equestrian Neighborhood By fate, Nona Green & Associates is representing the listing of a home in Old Agoura, Agoura Hills, CA that pays homage to mid-century architect Albert Frey. Frey used corrugated metal siding or roofing - it was strong, durable, and low maintenance, and appealed to a recycling sensibility. Like Frey would have preferred, the home is a shrine to the indoor/outdoor living. The site was cherry-picked for its unobstructed 360-degree view. The land is flat to gentle grade, and the south-facing yard would make the vintners and horse people drool. Old Agoura is right off the 101 Fwy near Kanan Dume Rd. Minutes to Malibu Beaches. Award-winning Las Virgenes School District. 45 minutes to LAX.
