Throwback Thursday: Bee Swarm in La Costa Carlsbad

Bee Swarm in La Costa Carlsbad

I've seen a few swarms of bees over the years, back in New England and here in Southern California. Perhaps you have, too!.

But this was the most amazing.

The bees collected into this huge cone in a pine tree at our first house here in Carlsbad, in La Costa, about 10 years ago. It probably lasted about an hour or so, and then within a few minutes they were all gone.

So glad I saw it before it disappeared - from inside the house of course - and had my camera handy. Bees are certainly interesting creatures!

Hi Brian England

I suppose someone who knows bees knows how to deal with them. Not something I would want to do! I even steer clear of the bees on our hummingbird feeders.

Jeff I got bit by yellow jackets once, so these days I do not get to close to bee hives

This is fascinating, I've yet to see this happen. Great capture - and smart to get the photo from "indoors."

Oh yeah, George Souto  I have been stung by those buggers a number of times. NOT a pleasant experience. As far as I know these were honey bees, but no doubt they pack a powerful sting, too!

Hi Jeff Dowler, CRS,

WOW!  That gives me the hee-bee-gee-bees!  I remember going down a dirt road a few years ago and seeing what appeared to be a dust cloud in front of me. It happened to be a bee swarm. They hit my windshield and I did all I could do to roll the windows and turn on the windshield wipers on. A couple did make it inside.

I always find it so fascinating when bees swarm like that.  I've only witnessed it a few times, but am always amazed at the calm of bee keepers who handle them.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD  - it was a first for me, but glad I saw it. No way did I want to be near those bees, especially when they decided to relocate.

Hi Jane Peters

Well you do have to wonder what brought them there. Guess the queen decided to test out the neighborhood but found it not to her liking.

Kathy Streib :

Well I'm glad to have spotted them from inside instead of discovering them while out in the yard. They might not have been happy to see me up close!

Hi Bob Crane  - I have seen swarming a number of times, but never a collection of bees in one spot. It was impressive, and we could hear a pretty loud buzzing sound.
