Motivational Monday...Finding the Positive

There is a great deal of Pollyanna in me. It is who I am and it’s way too late in my life to change that.

During last week's storms, there were so many sad and tragic stories. Not to quotediminish the 5 who died or those who experienced flooding in their homes, there were stories that came out of this that make you feel good about people.

A group of high school swimmers in Kingwood went around the neighborhood to help with the cleanup. Bystanders risked their own lives to help others out of their flooded vehicles.

One man driving food supplies in his 18 wheeler found himself stranded along with other drivers on I-10. With his boss's permission, he opened his truck to share what he had. Another driver was a cook, so after locating a grill, they fed between 30-40 people.

And Houston’s own Mattress Mack, owner of Gallery Furniture, opened his store for those who needed shelter and sent out the store’s trucks to help rescue others.

Some find the hole when times are tough. It’s easy to see what went wrong or who’s to blame rather than what can be done.

For example, the school district was criticized for not canceling classes that day. Parents were livid. But as some have said, many of the children have working parents. You can’t send kids home if no one is going to be there.

I prefer to focus on the teachers who had the children up on benches so they could be above the water and who gave comfort to the children.

And to focus on the parents who quickly raised almost $5,000 for a fund to replace the ruined shoes of the teachers and staff.

Bad things happen...bad people happen. There’s very little we can do about it. Accept what is and try like heck to find the positive.

In my early career, there were more negative lessons than positive ones. But I don't think I was looking for the positives enough. Mark Pincus

Speaking of good people I have never seen us rally like the help we have given the people of the Bahamas. The aid from South Florida and other nations just goes to show there are many good people out there. The aid will go on for years from our area and it is a shame our goverment has turned a blind eye to these people.

I was watching the new Netflix series about Bill Gates. AMAZING how his foundation is literally turning human waste into power and clean water for 3rd world countries!
In my counseling biz, I routinely deal with people 'in crisis' and the first thing we want to do is transmute that energy.
"What if the Divine has a better plan, and this event is necessary for your ultimate joy and success?"
Because that is how it works!

Kathy Streib - these are the stories most viewers and listeners miss when watching National TV. What has happened and continues to happen to the people in Houston is a tragedy but there are people who rise above it all and would give the shirt off their back to help another human in need. Houston is strong because of the people who live there.

Hi Kathy Streib,

I think it is important to find the good in everything. I consider myself a full glass kind of person - not half full or half empty.  We sometimes forget that air makes up whatever liquid is not in the glass!  There is always a positive outcome in negative situations. Like you, I find a learning lesson in all of it.

Growing up in Houston until 7th grade, I saw the good in people from Texas. To this day, I have a special feeling and connection to the people and the state.

I love hearing the good stories more than the bad ones and even through tragic times, good comes from it.

Kathy,

Finding the positive aspects in any situation is the key to happiness and continuing to help others.  One of my favorite quotes is:

“Thousands of candles can be lighted from a single candle, and the life of the candle will not be shortened. Happiness never decreases by being shared.”

Wayne Martin I agree. Why waste time on being negative?!

Michael Jacobs Rather than mope and complain, these people looked at what they could contribute.

Donald Urschalitz Floridians really are stepping up!!!  When I lived in Delray one of our neighbors collected clothing and non=perishables to be sent to those in need.

Candice A. Donofrio we have to be realistic about what occurs and ask ourselves what we can do about it. We can sink into the negative or find a way and do something.

Hi Kathy Streib, there will always be challenges in life, we have the choice to either sink or rise above. Our attitudes make a great difference.

Hi Kathy Streib it's nice to know another Pollyanna! Perspective is always a choice. I listened to many, many wonderful stories of people helping people in the Houston area. So many good and great people in the world who truly do care about their neighborhoods, especially in times of great need.
