Motivational Monday...Finding the Positive
There is a great deal of Pollyanna in me. It is who I am and it’s way too late in my life to change that.
During last week's storms, there were so many sad and tragic stories. Not to diminish the 5 who died or those who experienced flooding in their homes, there were stories that came out of this that make you feel good about people.
A group of high school swimmers in Kingwood went around the neighborhood to help with the cleanup. Bystanders risked their own lives to help others out of their flooded vehicles.
One man driving food supplies in his 18 wheeler found himself stranded along with other drivers on I-10. With his boss's permission, he opened his truck to share what he had. Another driver was a cook, so after locating a grill, they fed between 30-40 people.
And Houston’s own Mattress Mack, owner of Gallery Furniture, opened his store for those who needed shelter and sent out the store’s trucks to help rescue others.
Some find the hole when times are tough. It’s easy to see what went wrong or who’s to blame rather than what can be done.
For example, the school district was criticized for not canceling classes that day. Parents were livid. But as some have said, many of the children have working parents. You can’t send kids home if no one is going to be there.
I prefer to focus on the teachers who had the children up on benches so they could be above the water and who gave comfort to the children.
And to focus on the parents who quickly raised almost $5,000 for a fund to replace the ruined shoes of the teachers and staff.
Bad things happen...bad people happen. There’s very little we can do about it. Accept what is and try like heck to find the positive.
In my early career, there were more negative lessons than positive ones. But I don't think I was looking for the positives enough. Mark Pincus
