Motivational Monday - Strong Roots

Yesterday marked the 30-year anniversary of Hurricane Hugo hitting Charlotte, NC - and I mean he hit Charlotte with a vengeance. To this day, I swear we heard chain saws running 24/7 for the next 30 days! Trees lined the roads, obstructed the roads, fell on top of one another, fell on power lines, cars, homes and businesses - essentially, wreaking havoc on our incredibly gorgeous, Green City.

*Take a look at this quick video of a small portion of our beautiful city in 1989, immediatly following Hurricane Hugo.

**Note, the very first house shown in the video, I sold 20 years later! During Hugo, I hadn't a thought of becoming a real estate broker!

Storms come and go, strengthening our foundation and this one was no different. All tree roots did not hold with the hurricane-force winds and the massive amount of water Hugo dumped on the city but, the roots of the city did. How so? We banned together as a city, working diligently from sun-up to sun-down, clearing our streets, yards, driveways; offering shelter for those who could not live in their own homes, offering a warm meal to those who had no utilities and we never heard a complaint - at least I didn't!

Strengthen those roots & flourish

Despite the fact that I had a 16-month old and was expecting my second child in about 6 weeks, I joined in the clean-up in my neighborhood. While I couldn't lift the larger logs that were being cut, I was able to drag limb/leaf debris off of the roads and driveways. I didn't have power either but, I did have a gas grill and had plenty of food in my freezer that needed to be cooked. I would quit clearing about an hour before lunch to cook everyone hamburgers or whatever I had that was easy to eat 'on the run.' No one dilly-dallied - they ate and went right back to work. Camaraderie & simply being neighborly was the theme across, not just our neighborhood but, every community in Charlotte.

Be strong enough...Today's Motivational Monday message really hits home for me personally as well. As they say, you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. One day soon, I will share my husband's story and the long road he's had to take to get where he is today.

These things don't simply happen - we make them happen. We are strengthened with every challenge we accept. Like the neighborhoods of Charlotte, we were strenthened by Hugo, despite the losses Hugo left in his wake.

Be strong. Let the water flow deep into your roots and give you strength. Stand tall and flourish.

Happy Monday!

Debe, This reminds me of when Sandy hit Long Island, and how it still affects those living mostly on the South Shore. You bring a wonderful inspirational story to living in Charlotte during Hugo, and how people supported each other during times like it...

Hello Debe - Strong roots along with foundations of many kinds provide the "steadiness" that important.  In the past, present and the future.

Great quote and great story.  Hurricanes can take a lot out of you.  Charlotte is a beautiful city, I have been there.  When these storms are constantly feared, something has to be done.  In Florida they seem to be an inevitable catastrophe every few years.  This wears all of us down psychologically.  And I can see the parallel to struggles we have in life.  We have to keep our spirits high, pray, and do what we can do.  Either by ourselves or with the help of others who care and love us.

Debe, I was in Boston, MA and I can still clearly remember what Hugo did. This was like going back in time.... it even made a mess in New York and Connecticut if memory serves me right.... Loved how you tied this flashback to your Motivational Quote...Endre

Well, I typically start thinking about my motivational Monday post on Saturdays. The news happened to have a reminder about Hugo and you know, the mind ponders.. 😂

Hugo left a lot of destruction in his wake - all up and down the eastern seaboard (and beyond), Endre Barath, Jr.  I don't know how people who live on the coast tolerate the stress year-after-year.

You know, I love that you read the whole post, John Henry - you caught the 'meaning' of the entire message. Hurricanes do take a lot out of you and as I mentioned to Endre, how on earth you guys do it, I'll never know!

And, yes, personally I have learned to give sage advice from my years in nursing - the caregiver HAS to take care of his- or herself. Being keenly aware of ones own mental AND physical tolerance and WHEN to ask for help can make all of the difference in the world.

So many caregivers (and patients) don't feel comfortable asking. The irony of it all is that those around you WANT to help - they just don't know what to do... unless you ask!

Michael Jacobs, those foundations can steady houses, trees, walls, businesses, relationships...One could write a book on that - past, present and future!

Happy Tuesday!

Well, thank you, Lawrence "Larry" & Sheila Agranoff. Cell: 631-805-4400! It was quite the adventure - that's for sure! I can't imagine going through that again. I think that's why I'm not too keen on buying ocean property - lake, yes; ocean, no!

Hi Bob Jakowinicz! Thank you for stopping by and yes, people are generally good. I think we neglect to open our hearts and minds to others as readily as we could and distrust creeps in often when it shouldn't.

During Hugo I had people in my home that I didn't even know and didn't think a thing about it! We all had one purpose in life at that time - make sure everyone was safe and fed! We didn't even THINK to be afraid of them!

Hey Matthew Klinowski, PA! That's exactly how it was here with Hugo. I can't imagine your life though - with three months out of every year, not knowing if you're going to have to evacuate, board-up windows, etc. I commend those who have the stomach for that lifestyle! 😊

Hi Debe,
That is a very poignant collage of photos.  Storms come in many forms in life, don't they.  My experience in survival has been staying in the moment and not worrying about what's ahead. Just do what you can right now... in this moment, today.   I know you and Ray could write a book.  I'll look forward to hearing your story when you're ready to tell it.

Hi Debe- I can picture you out there doing what needed to be done!!! When you can find something positive after events such as Hugo, you know that life will go on and you will thrive. We have all been with you on Ray's and your journey and cannot wait to read more about it.
