Great post and oh, so true. I realize the truth in that last quote, "be strong enough to stand alone, smart enough to know when you need help and brave enough to ask for it." Not always easy to ask for help, especially when you are generally the giver.

We were in different locations as a child during hurricanes - Camille in Biloxi, MS, was the worst. Like you, as a child, hurricanes are a lot to 'understand' for young minds. I'm so thankful that I was able to get my little one to safety during Hugo.
Thank you, Sheri Sperry - MCNE® - it surely did hit me yesterday as I was reading some of the memories of Hugo - it seemed appropriate!
Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS, this is so true. We may not recognize how strong we are until we have no choice but to be strong. Certain events in our lives push us to our limits. Some may be overwhelmed while others push as hard as they can. You certainly had your share.

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Hurricane Hugo was a force to be reckoned with and you did it with a 16-month-old, pregnant and all! You certainly are strong, smart, and brave. And no matter how busy you are, you always find a way to not let anyone down. Your top priority is family and seamlessly you make things happen for other people behind the scenes without giving a shout out to yourself. Never, ever would I think you'd ever invite a pity party to your house or your blog.

Debe,
We do survive and hopefully are better people for it. It is part of life in our neck of the woods to have fires, flash floods and earthquakes, like it is in your part to have hurricanes. Happy Monday. A

Wow Debe Maxwell, CRS this is a very moving post. I didn't know that Hugo hit Charlotte that hard. It's amazing what we learn about our neighbors when a devasting situation occures. It brings out the best in people and I've witnessed that many a time over the years. You are so right, sometimes we don't know how strong and resourceful we all are - until sometimes happens to prove it. I've had times when I had no idea of how I was going to make it through a situation....but I always did as it seems to me is the case with most of us.

I just had to have that conversation with a friend who is going through SO much right now, Lottie Kendall. She needed to ask and wouldn't. I shared with her that people WANT to help but, because she had been so stoic and hadn't asked (for anything), they don't know that she needs help.
It's the most difficult thing in the world to do - for a giver to ask for help - but, the fact of the matter is, people WANT to help and they often feel helpless when we don't give them something to help with.

Hi Beth Atalay! I think it's human nature to push - at least it is for me! If I didn't do that, I couldn't imagine life any other way. I think there's a inner 'motivator' that keeps us ticking!

Debe Maxwell, CRS - Adaptability is a characteristic you naturally acquired in nursing and motherhood. I'm not surprised it's one of your strengths. Through my eyes in reading your blog post and having had the pleasure of meeting you in person is you are open-minded, mindful of others, very creative, and RESILIENT! You're such a blessing to us all on ActiveRain.
I don't know which is worse, Ron and Alexandra Seigel and I am thankful that we are far enough inland to rarely have to deal with hurricanes. Althought we had two last year, it's not often that we do.
Oh, yes, it was wild - we had no idea what was about to 'hit' us and boy, were we totally surprised, Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, CRS 602-380-4886! They kept saying it was going to be bad in our area but, because we're so far inland, I really didn't think anything of it. I think more Charlotteans took the "it's-not-going-to-impact-us" mentality than didn't.
I totally agree with you - there are times we get through something and then wonder how we did it. For me, it's best if I don't think about it. I'm not talking about burying your head in the sand either - just diving in and conquering!

That's what I was thinking - so far inland, can that be possible. YES! Totally get the 'just get it done' and don't think about it. That's what I do at times.....it is what is so make the best of it possible.
Hi Debe:
Thank you for such a powerful and inspiring message. It seems disasters bring out the best in humanity overall, perhaps with a few exceptions, with people doing what they can to help others in need, and without being asked.

Oh no, it just began, Will Hamm! In fact, the week I was on Hilton Head Island last month (the last week of August), was the last week of 'safe' vacationing on the coast for 2-3 months! The weekend that we left Hilton Head, Dorian destroyed Grand Bahama. 😢
It's so true, Sharon Lee - you really don't understand that until you've lived through your first 'catastrophe,' do you?!
Yes, that is correct, Jeff Dowler, CRS! What is funny is that I don't remember the 'bad' - the looting is something that I had forgotten. I only remember the 'good' that came of the storm - the humanitarians who did FAR more than I did.
Hi Debe:
And that is what we all SHOULD focus on, because that's what's most important. It's a shame some try to take advantage but that happens in life regardless, disaster or not.

Good morning Debe, a very inspirational way to start the day. It certainly brings back memories. Like Hugo, Irma was challenging to live through. Great quote and great story. Hurricanes can take a lot out of you. Charlotte is a beautiful city, I have been there. When these storms are constantly feared, something has to be done. In Florida they seem to be an inevitable catastrophe every few years. This wears all of us down psychologically. And I can see the parallel to struggles we have in life. We have to keep our spirits high, pray, and do what we can do. Either by ourselves or with the help of others who care and love us.

And, yes, personally I have learned to give sage advice from my years in nursing - the caregiver HAS to take care of his- or herself. Being keenly aware of ones own mental AND physical tolerance and WHEN to ask for help can make all of the difference in the world.
So many caregivers (and patients) don't feel comfortable asking. The irony of it all is that those around you WANT to help - they just don't know what to do... unless you ask!
Hey there! He's coming home on 10/2. I have a marketing meeting tomorrow and had to prep for it so, I'm late to AR. I was happy to see you on my blog today. Miss you! Give Diane a hug for me, Endre Barath, Jr.!

Hi Bob Jakowinicz! Thank you for stopping by and yes, people are generally good. I think we neglect to open our hearts and minds to others as readily as we could and distrust creeps in often when it shouldn't.
During Hugo I had people in my home that I didn't even know and didn't think a thing about it! We all had one purpose in life at that time - make sure everyone was safe and fed! We didn't even THINK to be afraid of them!

Hey Matthew Klinowski, PA! That's exactly how it was here with Hugo. I can't imagine your life though - with three months out of every year, not knowing if you're going to have to evacuate, board-up windows, etc. I commend those who have the stomach for that lifestyle! 😊

The one advantage of hurricanes versus tornados or earthquakes is we have the opportunity to prepare well in advance for a storm. It's the price we pay to live in paradise ![]()
Hi Debe,
That is a very poignant collage of photos. Storms come in many forms in life, don't they. My experience in survival has been staying in the moment and not worrying about what's ahead. Just do what you can right now... in this moment, today. I know you and Ray could write a book. I'll look forward to hearing your story when you're ready to tell it.
Great story!!! Very inspiring!!!
