Motivational Monday - Strong Roots

Yesterday marked the 30-year anniversary of Hurricane Hugo hitting Charlotte, NC - and I mean he hit Charlotte with a vengeance. To this day, I swear we heard chain saws running 24/7 for the next 30 days! Trees lined the roads, obstructed the roads, fell on top of one another, fell on power lines, cars, homes and businesses - essentially, wreaking havoc on our incredibly gorgeous, Green City.

*Take a look at this quick video of a small portion of our beautiful city in 1989, immediatly following Hurricane Hugo.

**Note, the very first house shown in the video, I sold 20 years later! During Hugo, I hadn't a thought of becoming a real estate broker!

Storms come and go, strengthening our foundation and this one was no different. All tree roots did not hold with the hurricane-force winds and the massive amount of water Hugo dumped on the city but, the roots of the city did. How so? We banned together as a city, working diligently from sun-up to sun-down, clearing our streets, yards, driveways; offering shelter for those who could not live in their own homes, offering a warm meal to those who had no utilities and we never heard a complaint - at least I didn't!

Strengthen those roots & flourish

Despite the fact that I had a 16-month old and was expecting my second child in about 6 weeks, I joined in the clean-up in my neighborhood. While I couldn't lift the larger logs that were being cut, I was able to drag limb/leaf debris off of the roads and driveways. I didn't have power either but, I did have a gas grill and had plenty of food in my freezer that needed to be cooked. I would quit clearing about an hour before lunch to cook everyone hamburgers or whatever I had that was easy to eat 'on the run.' No one dilly-dallied - they ate and went right back to work. Camaraderie & simply being neighborly was the theme across, not just our neighborhood but, every community in Charlotte.

Be strong enough...Today's Motivational Monday message really hits home for me personally as well. As they say, you never know how strong you are until being strong is the only choice you have. One day soon, I will share my husband's story and the long road he's had to take to get where he is today.

These things don't simply happen - we make them happen. We are strengthened with every challenge we accept. Like the neighborhoods of Charlotte, we were strenthened by Hugo, despite the losses Hugo left in his wake.

Be strong. Let the water flow deep into your roots and give you strength. Stand tall and flourish.

Happy Monday!

Good morning, Debe Maxwell, CRS in time of need, good people step up.... humans have a natural instinct of survival and helping others who are weak to survive..... the hurricane reminds me of our blizzard of '78 in MA.... frozen solid for one full week..... too much snow for large plows.... front end loaders cleared roads but very slowly....

Roy,

if we can't accept challenges, we can't get any stronger. Great topic of choice.
