Things that make you go hmmm?

By
Real Estate Agent with Jameson Sotheby's International Realty

I understand that governments are starting to ban the sales of e-cigarettes and other vaping products.  There have been deaths that have been connected to vaping and vaping products, depending on whose statistics you use, in the single or double digits.

That means that somewhere between 1 and 99 people have died directly related to vaping.

Now, I don't want to minimize those deaths, nor the dangers of vaping. Personally it seems like a collosally stupid pastime.... but hey, that's just me.

But it begs the question, at least for me, that since we can easily point to thousands, and thousands of deaths (maybe even millions) from smoking tobacco and related products... not "e" products... but actual cigarettes, etc... and they are still legal... I have to wonder what the heck is going on?

Now, maybe it's because the vaping industry is merely in its infancy and doesn't have the funds or the lobbying power of the tobacco industry.  But if the logic being used is "danger" and "deaths".... things that make you go hmmmmm

Good evening Alan May ,

You are so right! I've been pondering this since the deaths from vaping came into the news. Certainly these deaths are not taken lightly but if they are going to ban vaping then why not smoking tobacco and related products? Doesn't make sense???

It really doesn't, does it?

and can you explain to me why anyone is surprised that when you put nicotine in your body bad things happen?

Sep 24, 2019 06:54 PM
Alan May

it's not even the nicotine in vaping that's causing the deaths.

It's a dilemma for sure, Alan. I've been thinking this myself with all the news on vaping recently.

I'm sure we're not alone in this thought.

That makes me go hmmm about why we have not tightened up gun laws either, while still respecting peoples second amendment rights.

Sep 25, 2019 04:56 AM

whole different argument... but I agree.

many gun owners would also welcome some common-sense regulation.

vaping actually doesn't have that same smell as smoking... since it's primarily vapor.. not smoke.

Good point. Vaping has been getting very popular, and is taking $$ away from the cigarette industry.... hmmmmm

Sep 29, 2019 07:02 AM

actually, Phillip Morris (now Altria Group) owns a 35% stake in Juul (the largest vaping company), and advertises Juul in it's cigarette packages.

Occassionaly, I can smell that sickeningly sweet vaping odor when I am stuck in traffic and somebody has their window down. Generally, it's a  young person. I think that's part of the current panic - vaping products, not well regulated and marketed toward a younger generation. Not saying cigarettes or chew are any better, but that might be part of the current action we're seeing. I do see your point too.

Sep 29, 2019 08:06 AM

clearly a major concern... marketing to the youth.

Totally get your point here, Alan.  Many, many things kill people yet the government chooses what to ban.  Maybe they need to outlaw stupidity and people would stop dying.

Sep 29, 2019 08:09 AM
Alan May

if they outlaw stupidity, I'd have to shut down my blog.

I read a study done by the British equivalent of the National Institute of Health. It said vaping as bad as it is, was 95% safer than cigarettes!

Sep 29, 2019 09:02 AM
Alan May

I don't think there's any question that cigarettes are worse than vaping (a different way to say the same thing)...

but I doubt there's anything "safe" about it.

I don't get the whole vaping craze - I just don't. Did they not learn how bad cigarettes are for ones health. Apparently not. I heard some crazy number of how many teens are vaping....not good. And people dying from vaping due to illegal substances?  Hmmmmmm

Sep 29, 2019 10:45 AM
Alan May

It's not as though we didn't know that smoking wasn't good for you... back in the day.  But they know so much more about how bad it is to suck foreign substances into your lungs, these days... I find it amazing that anyone is interested in that, at all.

No doubt a lot of things should be banned if they hurt you or someone else physically or psychologically.  But this is a 'free country' and we have the choice to make and must accept the consequences.  Vaping now is dangerous, as pointed out above, because there are 'aftermarket' sellers who will spike the sauce...

Sep 29, 2019 03:53 PM
Alan May

You're right.  it's a free country... and yet, there are plenty of things that we ban....  vaping doesn't seem to be one of those things that requires banning.     yet.

Yes the government the protector of all good and the banner of all evil.  Remember when eggs according to the government was bad and then good for you?  With this reasonsing, we better ban swimming pools, walking and less us not forget about cars.  I am with you Alan May  as I go hmm a lot.
