Leonard Digges was born c. 1515 in Barham, Kent, England to James and Philippe. Sorry but I do not have any information as to his early childhood or his education. What I can tell you is apparently he was highly educated, which you’ll find out why soon enough.
He worked as a surveyor. In 1542, he visited the castle of Guines where he impressed his host through debate and demonstration of his skills in geometry, navigation, measurement and artillery. He also published A General Prognostication in 1533, as it contained a perpetual calendar, collections of weather lore and astronomical material. There are also some claims he invented the reflecting telescope or the refracting telescope as part of the need to see accurately over long distances. While his death date is unknown it is widely held he passed around 1559.
What you may not know about Leonard is that he invented the theodolite. It is an instrument used for measuring angles between designated visible points in the horizontal and vertical planes. While his invention has been improved the concept remain the same to this day. not bad to have something that has lasted for over 460 years.
