Robert Digges Wimberly Connor was born in Wilson, North Carolina back in 1878 to Henry and Kate. He graduated from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 1899. In 1907, he was placed in charge of the North Carolina Historical Commission. He lobbied the North Carolina General Assembly for a building and funding for what would later become the State Archives of North Carolina. He served as the first state archivist of North Carl=olina from 1907 to 1921.

In 1921, he was a professor at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, a position he held until 1934. He died in 1950, he was 71.

What you may not know about Robert is that in 1934 President Franklin Roosevelt appointed him to head the National Archives of the United States, making him the first American historian, a position he held from 1934 to 1941.

Good morning,  James: it's interesting this department didn't exist until FDR.  I would have thought there would be a longer history(so to speak). Interesting.  I wonder if it still exists today.

I adore history and while some try to rewrite history to suit their needs, I try to remember what I learned in school. It used to be a requirement for high school graduation, but those days are gone along with social studies and civics James Dray
