Fifty-nine years ago on October 14, 1960, then-Senator John F. Kennedy inspired a 10,000-student strong crowd at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Michigan.
That historic speech was when Kennedy first described his vision for a Peace Corps.
The Michigan students immediately took action to activate Kennedy's fledgling idea, with a petition signed by 1,000 students stating they were willing to serve abroad in such a capacity.
Soon after taking office as the President of the United States, and less than 6 months from its first mention, President John F. Kennedy established the Peace Corps on March 1, 1961.
