Before Real Estate

Real Estate Broker/Owner with HomeRome Realty 410-530-2400 311291

An ActiveRain Challenge for October 2019 - 'In My Past Life I…'

is hosted by Jeff Dowler, CRS

In researching just what to write about,  this post came up written by another AR member Erika Rae Albert, Austin Real Estate Expert

Real estate was not my first career.

RN That's me

 Receiving my nursing diploma

The first started many years ago when my goal was to be a nurse. And I filled that goal, became a Pediatric RN, and then a head nurse.

Loved it.

Nursing prepared me for life. And it was probably the best at teaching me how to sell.

If you can convince a patient, especially a child, to take a yucky tasting medication or even an injection because it is going to make them feel better, that is selling!

If you can deal with the stress of an illness within a family, you can prepare for dealing with the sometimes overwhelming stress of a move.

My second career was that of a ceramic artist.

Loved it!

Blue porcelain Margaret Rome

Porcelain by Margaret Rome

There was a full studio in my home where I custom designed pottery for clients, The Design Center in DC, the Symphony Decorator's Show House, plus doing window displays for fine jewelry stores. My porcelains were used to drape the strands of gold, diamonds, and pearls over the art pieces.

I even made closing gifts for some of the real estate agents.

That changed when...

And now, I've been in Real Estate since 1990 and a solo broker since 2009. And you guessed it.

I love real estate.

Both of my previous positions, nurse and artist, prepared me well for this profession.

And I am thankful for all three!

I admire those who can be a nurse or doctor dealing with sickness. It takes a very special person to do such a demanding stressful job. When I was younger I enjoyed Ceramics and I'm sure you created some spectacular designs. Thanks for sharing your story.

I am certain that you were a very good nurse and I recall that Debe Maxwell, CRS used to also be a really good nurse before her career in real estate.

Hello Margaret - the comparisons between vocations and even avocations are what make the "total" person.  I know of one person who entered real estate as his first profession but it seems rare.

I knew you were a potter, because of a post we wrote that you commented on.  I did not know  about your nursing career.  Enjoyed your post.  Happy Tuesday.

Hi Margaret:

I DID know about your prior career in nursing and as a ceramicist,  but it was fun to read again! A good friend of mine, a fellow CRS in Silicon Valley, also has a past career in nursing!

Hi Margaret! I knew your background but, still enjoyed reading it again! You're so right - nursing totally prepared us for the big world of real estate.

I had a client tell me yesterday that I would have been a fantastic counselor. It seems we use our psychology background even more than stats, trig & calculus in both nursing AND real estate! Supposedly, talking people off of the ledge is my forte - and I didn't even know it! 😂

Margaret Rome, Baltimore Maryland - I guess I could say there are a lot of sick people in real estate but I won't...

I got a chuckle out of Barbara Todaro comment. I would add, you really are a work of art and beautiful too! We are so lucky to have you here on ActiveRain. You make it a point to get to know everyone and that is quite an attribute to be proud of!
