WARNING - LG Refrigerators

By

It is wonderful to be able to go on vacation, but even better to come home.    EXCEPT when you find your 14-month-old refrigerator went out while you were gone!

When I moved last year, I bought all new Kenmore Elite black stainless steel appliances and did not buy the extended warranty.  I have never needed one until now!   I still have a Montgomery Wards freezer in the garage!

LG knows about the compressor problem, and in-fact the parts are warrantied but would have been about a month before the refrigerator would have been fixed.   As it was, there was an update for the software for the compressor that needed to be done, or mine would have been fixed a week ago.

There is a class action suit against LG right now with these compressors, and they KNOW about it and are still using the same compressors.   It is a wonderful refrigerator, so if you buy one, buy the warranty, but know if you need to use it, better have another refrigerator, as it will be quite a while without one!

Ugh.  I am so not impressed with today's appliances.  Call me old fashioned, but really does a refrigerator or a washer need to have a computer that will only break down?  Give me my grandmother's washer any day.  As you say, your good old freezer still does the job, but fashion dictates that we must have the newest and latest trends.

I have never purchased an LG appliance, I tend to stick with the tried and true.  I would definitely not want to wait a month for them to fix a faulty part.

Hello Joan - household appliances gone amok are definitely not the sign of a happy return especially when followed by a long delay.  Yikes.

hmmmmm....Joan, LG stands for Life's Good...but I think that name must not apply to their refrigerators....that is no way to get home from a vacation.

Oh Montgomery Wards...now that was the good old appliances.  They just don't make them like they used to.  I hate that happened, maybe they will start a class action soon.  Hope that you have a wonderful weekend!

Oh no!

Not many people have back up refrigerators! I never buy the extended warranty, but it doesn't seem worth it if it takes so long to get it fixed.

Andrea Bedard unfortunately, I DID stink, lots of fish in the freezer portion, and other meats.   It is working now, hopefully for more than 14 months!    Having a flood when you get home sounds like NO FUN either.

Kathy Streib it was quite the surprise, and lots to do when you get home for sure.  Calling appliance repair USUALLY should not be on the list.

We have had our LG refrigerator for four years. No problems - knock on wood. There is little more frustrating than coming home to a non-functioning refrigerator, especially if all the food in the freezer is thawed.  Sorry to hear, Joan.   ( As for appliances of long ago, they were work horses, not I think they intentionally make sure they don't last more than  about 10 years...)

Nina Hollander the appliance repair dude said almost every model built now is built to break down, unless you pay $10K for the appliance.  SAD!

Georgie, I agree, and had a W/D at my old house that were 35+ years old.  Bought new ones for this home, so HOPE they don't break down too.

Brian England around here I had heard good things about LG, not breaking down after a short time.    SAD!

Michael Jacobs definitely had other things planned versus waiting for an appliance repair person and their 4 hour windows!

Jeff, had to chuckle, not sure I would describe that refrigerator that way!

Roy, it is sad we need to "warn" anyone, but don't want anyone else to have to deal with this same situation.

Wayne & Jean, even IF I had a warranty, Sears said the SOONEST they could come out to LOOK at the refrigerator was 3 weeks, that is just stupid!

Debb, glad to hear you have not had any issues, and absolutely love this refrigerator, sadly.

Good morning Joan - I did have a problem with a washing machine that was Kenmore.  I could not wait and it was time.  I got a new one but these things should not happen.
