October Is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month

Where To Adopt A Shelter Dog In Charlotte, NC

October is National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month.  October is also the first full month of fall... why not fall for a shelter dog during National Adopt A Shelter Dog Month?

Adopt A Shelter Dog... Save A Life!

Save a life... adopt a shelter petDid you know that up to 8 million pets end up in shelters each year and that half of these will never be adopted? That may explain why over 50% of dogs in shelters end up euthanized. And if you're looking for a specific breed, it's worth noting that some 25% of the animals in shelters are actually pure-breds. $1 billion annually is spent picking up, sheltering, and euthanizing pets in this country! Homeless pets outnumber homeless people by 5 to 1. Can you think of any reason not to adopt if you're looking for your fur-ever companion?

As the Humane Society of Charlotte put it... "come meet our adorable canines and you may just have a new walking buddy, couch potato partner or forever friend." Here's your link to meet some of the Humane Society of Charlotte's dogs available for adoption.  The Humane Society of Charlotte also offers 10% discounts on all adoptions and services to seniors age 65 and older and to all military.

The Humane Society of Charlotte has two adoption locations in town:

  • HSC Main Shelter at 2700 Toomey Avenue | Charlotte, NC 28203. The shelter is open Mondays through Sundays from 11:00 am till 5:00 pm. 704-377-0534.

  • HSC Petco Adoption Center in the Northcross Shopping Center | 10017 Biddick Lane | Huntersville, NC 28078. Petco is open from 11:00 am till 7:00 pm 7:00 pm daily.  704-895-7643

Aw. 8 million homeless pets is a staggering number. It breaks my heart, and frustrates me too because it is a preventable problem. I sure hope many of these loving dogs are adopted.

Barbara Todaro hi Barbara... for me having fur-babies in my house is worth the effort... I find living without them makes my house feel very empty.

Nina Hollander I had a dog when I was in public school and when the children were growing up.... we had a dog before we had children.... and there are times when I seriously consider it, but it IS a big commitment....if I have hesitation, THAT'S a decision maker for me!

We fell in love the minute we saw her. The shelter named her (she lived there for 5 months waiting for us), I presume ironically.

Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD hi Debb... that's the tragedy of it.. it's a preventable problem if only people would spay, neuter, micro-chip their pets. It breaks my heart, as well, knowing so many never find a loving home.

Nina Hollander - While I definitely feel there's a need to have good shelters and for people to adopt, I can't help but wonder what the ratio is to shelters for children and people willing to adopt?

Hi Nina,  Thanks for this great blog post.  All of our dogs have been rescue dogs. My wife's dog died a few weeks ago.  This month might be a good one to start looking  for a new dog for her.

Bob Crane hi Bob... thanks for supporting the "cause." All our pets also come from shelters--dogs and cats--and they have always been wonderful members of the family. Sorry to hear that your wife's dog died... having lost my cat less than a year ago I know how difficult it is to go through.

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP hi Patricia... that would be a hard number to come up with, I think. And getting approved for a child adoption is much harder and moree complex than for a pet.
