Which Life? A Snapshot

EmmittI new what I wanted to be when I grew up... I just couldn't be it. I wanted to be Emmett Clark. Emmett owned and operated Emmetts Fix-it Shop on Andy of Mayberry. I had the skills it's just by the time I became old enough (notice I say old enough... I never did "grow up") we were already living in a disposable world and one just can not make a living fixing general stuff these days. That being said, my talent for fixing just about anything was handy when I was a Realtor and Property Manager.

old digitOne of my previous lives that I enjoyed was that of being a professional photographer. While working for United Photographic Industries of Galion OH I lead several teams that did photography at churches. The division of that company was United Church Directories. It was GREAT until the owners retired and sold it to a morally void company called Lifetouch. As United Church Directories they were cutting edge with the first digital cameras in the business.

This lead me to try a little photography on the side that I called LubitelRobare's Studio. I did very little business with Robare's but it helped me build my love of photography. Although the day of digital had dawned and I was using the latest in commercial equipment for United my camera of choice in Robare's Studio was an old Russian medium format camera called a Lubitel. There was a learning curve to this camera but for me it was well worth it. I took many beautiful pictures of many beautiful people with that camera. Regrettably my Lubitel was also a casualty of the flood we experienced in 2011 but even seeing a picture like the one above of the old Russian camera brings joy to my heart.

Photography is a great companion to Real Estate and it was one of my previous lives that I enjoyed then and still today although my subjects today are family, flowers, and bunnies.

A thank you to Jeff Dowler, CRS for challenging us with thinking about our past lives with his challenge An ActiveRain Challenge for October 2019 - In My Past Life I…

I still have a few of my old cameras Grant Schneider and I'm really surprised I have those and NOT my Lubitel.

Brian England I do love that phones have cameras in them so I always have one with me BUT I don't care what the stats show on paper, a good camera is always going to beat out a phone camera in my book.

Will Hamm I find tinkering soothing to my soul and a nice side benefit is I've been showing my son how to do it as well so he will be better prepared for life (and he will know what to do with all those tools of mine when I kick the bucket).

He's follically challenged Sam Shueh just like me . He sure has done well for himself as a producer over the years.

I'd never heard of those Lauren Williams, CPO  so yes, that sounds like a great fit. I may have to start one here in Minot ND.

Hi Bob:

Well this certainly was a fun read, in part because I learned several things I didn't know about you (sadly, I was aware of the flood you endured). The photography background was a surprise. I am not a fixit/tinkering kind of person but I sure admire those who have that interest and talent!

Thank you Jeff Dowler, CRS . When you really don't know what you want to do in life (that will support you and your family) you try a lot of stuff. If I had to do it all over again I would have gone into the medical field.

Hi Bob- you and my husband share the love of being able to fix things. Now that he is retired, it is one of his many hobbies. And I too had no idea about your background in photography.

You are very talented Bob! It is too bad we are in such a disposable generation, I would much rather have something fixed then to buy it new, but it is less costly just to buy new.  It is a gift to be able to do that.  I also wanted to say I love all of your cool camera's you had.  I am sorry for your loss in the flood.  It did not get the best of you, you just keep on going and shining your light. Thanks for this one!

Thank you Brenda J. Andrew . Just like the disposable age did in tinkering digital cameras did in all the cool old cameras. Film was fun to work with, especially if you enjoyed the darkroom process but honestly digital is so much easier and cheaper because it doesn't cost anything to take a hundred pictures on an outing anymore.

Happy to share Abby Stiller . I don't know what it is with photography, it seems like either you got it or you don't. My mom could not take a picture withiout cutting of a persons head... I never could figure that out.

Bob "RealMan" Timm - For women like me, a "Tinkerer" is God's gift to woman and mankind! They don't get enough R-E-S-P-E-C-T! You're a problem solver who solves problems and you don't even need to watch a YouTube video to figure it out. Your brain is wired well and you have a heart and soul.

I'll bet you had a lot of fun with that Camera. Since Sheila Anderson and Nick Vandekar here on AR are into antiques, have you thought about asking them to keep their eyes out if the "old Russian medium format camera called a Lubitel," becomes available? I lived through floods and fires and lost lots of valuable items. I truly empathize.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm tinker on I say!  That's a great story!  And your camera photos are really cool. Bummer you lost your favorite one in the flood. Maybe one of these days another one will magically show up on your doorstep!!

Patricia Feager, MBA, CRS, GRI,MRP the camera is still readily available on eBay but I like being in the digital age of photography now, it's so much less expensive. If I did get another Lubitel it would only be for display. Thanks for the kind words about my tinkering.

Hi Bob "RealMan" Timm It looks like your first digital camera had a cassette tape for media storage. Obviously before inexpensive chips. I love seeing how creative the inventors of modern technology were before they had access to the things we take for granted.
