The Blue Angels and Sips of Mead

The Greater Sacramento Community of Rancho Cordova had two delightful events that occurred this past weekend.  My daughter, Jill, had captured a couple tickets to the First Anniversary event of Strad Meadery, where we were given the opportunity to sample several of their products on Saturday.

My favorites ware the Blueberry and Blackberry Meads, My daughter was also fond of the Yuzu Mead.  Yuzu fruits are a citrus fruit believed to have originated in Central China. However, I found one of the surprises at the event to be the Coffee Mead, which went really well with the chocolate brownies I found on the buffet table.

At the end of our visit, I purchased four bottles - one each of those I mentioned.

Mead contains half the alcohol of wine, has fresh crisp flavors which are light, not filling, and have the ability to transport the imagination to renaissance times, with the appropriate music and aptly dressed characters accompanying it.

Interestingly, enough several at our table were  uncostumed Renaissance Faire folks, who had at least one member who wasn't content with the fact The Pirates of Sacramento had partnered up with them at several events - even though I pointed out renaissance and pirate costumes were similar, with the exception of pirates wearing their distinctive hats.  Still, there wasn't enough alcohol in the Mead to create any raucous brawls over it!

According to Dan Slort, Mead Maker, The Strad logo is comprised of a stylized violin (A Stradivarius made by Antonius Stradivari in the 17th century) floating over a honeycomb with bees flying across the image. The violin is in honor of his grandfather who made and played this beloved instrument for most of his 96 years of life.

Simultaneously with this event at the meadery, The Blue Angels were performing nearby at Mather Air Force Base. This was Rancho Cordova’s weekend to host the Capital Airshow!

Hy Myrl, interesting logo, and the Strad looks like a modern-shaped electric violin. Honey-comb, violin, bees, all beautiful images - but only bees can perform on such a violin!

What a great day, my son used to make mead, what I tasted was always very dry, I think he needed more sugar, but he likes brewing and graduated to makeing beer which I think he found easier. Looks like you had a good time and that logo is pretty good.

Myrl, you make mead sound good; the few I've had were far too sweet for my liking. We're looking forward to the Fleet Week air show this coming weekend.

Don't you love the airshows? We have the Thunderbirds who fly for special occasions at the Air Force Academy and I LOVE the sound as they zoom over our house and city.

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat

I have never had any sort of mead.  I am going to have to look for it when I go shopping.  It sounds like a wonderful event.

Of course, air shows are my husband's favorite.

Hi Myrl:

That's quite a combination...mead and Blue Angels! I've seen the Angels before but have never tried mead, although I've heard of it. I'll have to be on the lookout for it - sounds intriguing!

Sounds like a fun way to be outdoors Myrl, enjoying locally made mead.  My brother who is a beekeeper, has made mead with his honey.  Good stuff.

Mead has taken off in recent years as a beverage for adults.  Cheers!

Myrl Jeffcoat, loved your interesting story on the great day you and your daughter, Jill,  had at the Sacramento events.  I have never tasted Mead and will check it out.  I recall when I lived in the highest condo high-rise in Waikiki, we loved when the Blue Angels in formation flew over.  Myrl, thank you for sharing your 'fun' day.
