Are You Familiar With These Nuts

When waiting for visitors at an open house

38 Bouton Green in Village of Cross Keys

this week, these nuts were all over.

Do you know what these are?

The seller did not know, and none of the agents or visitors knew.

So I’ve taken photos of these round nuts and am asking for help from our brilliant AR members. Do they look familiar to you?

 Can you help identify them?

What are these nuts?

The first photo shows them in the landscaping gravel. The second on a brick so you can get an idea of the size. The third shows four different stages.

The fourth shows a closeup with the outer skin peeled away. A bit larger than a quarter.

But what are they?

At first glance I thought they may be chestnuts.  But, Chestnuts have a really spiney outer shell before they get to anything that looks like that.

It sure looks like walnuts.  But I don't think I've ever seen the tree.

If you Google "walnuts from a tree" they look very similar. Start out green and then open. Looks like some little critters are getting fat and sassy.

Mimi Foster I took a look and not sure I see this one. The "shell" on this nut is very thin...easy to peel. Not hard like a walnut. The only thing this is doing for me is making me hungry for a handful of nuts!

I came across these images of Hickory nuts.  They look similar to your photos.

It seems like the consensus is that they are walnuts, but Myrl Jeffcoat makes a compelling push for hickory nuts.  Did you taste them?  Are they good?

They sure look like a type of walnut to me, but this is getting a little nutty, take a few to the local nursery.  I have to know!  I will not be able to sleep.
