Should I add seasonal decor when my house is for sale?

Fall is not only a great time to sell, it's also one of the best times to add some seasonal decor to your Silver Spring, MD & beyond home for sale. Normally, you'll hear us advice to depersonalize and to neutralize your property before putting it on the market. But there is nothing wrong with adding some seasonal decor and creating curb appeal that reflects the season - as long as it's done tastefully!

How to create curb appeal when selling your Silver Spring home during the fallEspecially here in Maryland where we (based on not-so-scientific research that includes observing my community, and seeing the influx of fall memes and pictures and general happiness about sweater weather) welcome the cooler temps that fall brings, the many fall activities, and abundance of seasonal fares - pumpkin everything please, I'm a huge fan - seasonal decor is a good staging move to make when you are preparing your home for sale.

The goal is always to create a wonderful first impression (you only get one chance to do so!), one that welcomes all potential buyers, and beckons them inside. You accomplish that by cleaning up, making sure that everything is in neat, tidy, and operating condition, and by creating a warm home. Because that is what you are selling... a home, not just a property. By embracing the season, adding some seasonal decor, and creating seasonal curb appeal you can appeal to the buyers senses and evoke pleasant feelings and happy memories.

Fall is a wonderful time to sell, and fall offers up the best staging props: mums, pumpkins, cornstalks, hay, apples... skillfully arranged all work to create seasonal curb appeal, a welcoming entrance and a warm home! Just make sure to not go overboard (and don't forget to water your mums!)... tickle the [buyer's] senses, but don't overwhelm [the buyer].

Should you accent your Silver Spring, MD & beyond home for sale with seasonal decor: yes!!

Do add a touch of fall to welcome buyers in, to create a warm atmosphere, and to make sure that buyers will associate your property with happy and homey feelings - and write that offer :)

P.S. if decorating is not one of your strength, you can hire a professional stager, or work with me (I am an ASP® = Accredited Staging Professional), or both! All my seller clients receive a to-do list before putting their home on the market, and my keen eye for detail and helping hand for staging. It's part of the package, it's what I love to do!

Good morninfg Andrea Bedard - as in your picture seasonal decor like that adds to the curb appeal.  On the other hand the over decorated house like some do would be a distraction.

I've never had an issue with home sellers decorating for any holiday so long as it's done with good taste and restraint.

I am a fan of the exterior seasonal decorating for listings but not a lot inside. As you said, as long as it's done tastefully. Good morning to you, ma'am.

Seasonal decor when done tastefully can add a great touch to a home for sale. Obviously if sellers use you they will be advised well and not overdo it.

Agreed, Grant, there's definitely a fine line b/w just enough and too much. That's where we come in! I love to decorate, and enjoy collaborating with my clients and the stager to get it just right.

I have seen too bland, and too cautious, and too depersonalized Nina.. then the house is just not memorable to buyers. Tasteful decorations do help quite a bit.

I am a huge fan Mimi - and fall happens to be my favorite.

Thank you Nick! I agree - just none of those gigantic inflatables please.
