Did you know that jack-o-lanterns originated in Ireland? Also, they didn't start out as carved pumpkins. (Ireland had no pumpkins.) Instead, the Irish carved turnips. Irish farmers hollowed out turnips, gourds, beets, and potatoes. Then, they carved faces into them and placed an ember inside. This was to ward off any evil spirits on All Hallow's Eve. When the Irish came to America, they brought this tradition with them. Over time, they transferred their carving from turnips to pumpkins. Pick yourself up a pumpkin or two at the 2019 Westfield Pumpkin Patch hosted by FUMC to ward off evil spirits at your house this Halloween.
Westfield Pumpkin Patch 2019
Beginning on Saturday, October 12th, First United Methodist on Broad St hosts their annual pumpkin patch. Money raised from all the pumpkins sold helps fund their upcoming international mission trip. The pumpkin patch stays open for business every day between 10:30 am and 6:30 pm. Yes, that includes Sundays, when church services take place (9 am to 12 pm).
As a special treat, the church hosts a Halloween-themed movie on three separate nights while the pumpkin patch is open. On Friday, October 18th, watch "Hotel Transylvania". Come see "Coco" on the following Friday (October 25th). And the final movie, "The Nightmare Before Christmas", will be shown on Saturday, October 26th. All movies begin at 6 pm. Make sure you bring a lawn chair and/or blanket for your comfort as well as any snacks you might want to nibble on during the movie. These screenings are provided free of charge.

Bike MS NYC 2019
We're coming down to the wire in our fundraising efforts for Bike MS NYC 2019. In just over a week (Sunday, October 20th), Team Guys & Dolls hits the streets of Manhattan for their annual trek around NYC. As of today, we haven't quite reached our goal of $15,000. Please visit the Guys & Dolls team fundraising page and donate what you can to help erase Multiple Sclerosis. We'd greatly appreciate it.
