Stop Website Designing By Committee

"This person says on their phone that the dash here looks odd"

"That person said they didn't like the color on this page"

"My friend said he couldn't find the menu"

"This person said the subscribe should be at the bottom"

This is what we hear as website designers all the time. I get it that you want your website to be attractive and usable to the majority of people but you can't please everyone all the time and that definitely goes for website design.

We've designed for multiple, large brokerages where the entire office chimes in on the site. At this rate, the site is almost never done and we go round and round for months. There will always be something that someone doesn't like but there are certain things a site should have before launching.

When we design we ask for one point of contact. This actually makes whoever is in charge relieved! Most of the time it's a receptionist or admin assistant and when that person has to go back and forth to everyone in the office, it can be a nightmare for them as well. Yes, I get it, you need to have a couple of people express their input and getting other's opinions can be helpful but we recently did a site where the owner posted on social media asking for everyone's opinion (Like, literally thousands of people). Well, you can imagine how many support emails I got to change this or that, even though we modeled the site after a prominent motivational speaker's site that gets thousands of hits a day (in my opinion, that's clearly working). And remember, people are looking at the site on many different devices so what they see may be completely different than what another person sees.

You have to go with what YOU like. We offer our suggestions based on SEO tactics and speed, but ultimately, it's your site and if it's getting you leads and working the way you want it, I don't think a slightly darker shade of blue is really going to make a world of difference.

Regardless, here are the basic points all websites should have:

  • Know who you are and what you do in the first 5 seconds of viewing the site
  • Easy ways to have someone contact you or buy your product or service
  • Clean and clear first page - not everything has to go on this one page
  • Images optimized for the web so the site loads fast
  • Opportunity to learn more in the form of a link/button
  • Immediately be able to solve the visitor's problem

Every time a person thinks, they are burning calories. When they visit your website, the more calories they burn, the faster they leave your site.  Don't make your visitors think too much.

Yes, everyone is an expert.

It's really frustrating when you spend hours doing something, and they turn around and change heir mind, and you have to redo it.
That's the reason I no longer do websites for anyone else.

Like your list of points all websites should have. I agree 100%.

Great post, Tammy Emineth!  It really is a great reminder that we all need to get back to work and simply set up our website to allow it to work for us.  As we say as professionals, there is no perfect house.

Tammy Emineth -- I am afflicted by a malaise that I refer to as "Opportunity Bound." My committee is only me and my son who is my website developer.

How do you feel about taking on websites designed by other people? We have taken over an expensive website done by another developer and my son is working on redesigning it.

My favorite was a clean and clear first page. It's so annoying to have to sludge thru so many items to find what you're looking for . . . and usually those are the ones that you have to swat the nasty pop ups. Great post. Congrats on the Feature.

Your real estate writer

When I first left real estate to do copywriting full time, I did quite a bit of work for animal rescue organizations. I even gave them a discount because the cause is dear to my heart.

I learned better! Unless there was just ONE person in charge, writing for them became a nightmare.

One fundraising letter in particular stands out for me as the reason that I stopped doing work for anyone who needed approval from a committee.  (Can you believe - among other things, I had to remove "the ask" because one committee member thought asking for a donation was tacky.)

I have seen too many poorly designed websites with the web-master's information and wondered why they would want credit for a woefully  inferior website. Not a good way to promote your website design business and certainly not for the website.

Thank you, I just had an aha moment reading your post, "that first page, doesn't have to have everything on it". That is very helpful in line with creating a cleaner more attractive looking site. Thanks.

Does it work and cause listings, sales? One person's whine is not another's cheese. Less is more... easy does it and think customer that is a not a black belt navigator. Confuse them, lose them. Flit happens. Too many other options.

Tammy I so get this one! Last time we had a new site, last year, we let him do his thing and it turned out better than we expected. Doing a website by committee sounds painful, darn right painful. Plus it would never get done.

Tammy Emineth, for agents with a page on their broker's site (realgeeks), what is software to use for creating and maintaining your page.  Broker is admin for uploads and updates, agent does the design.  Thanks!

Dear Tammy,

Probably getting a list of everyone's input can be informative, as the users and subject matter experts sometimes have good points, but in the end you need to go with what works and furthers your mission and brand.

There's some excellent advice here. It must be quite the challenge to work on a website where there are numerous, and proabbly conflicting opinions, even about little matters. The list of what to have is helpful!
