Thank you to Jeff Dowler, CRS for hosting this fun and interesting contest, An ActiveRain Challenge for October 2019 - In My Past Life I ... It has been so interesting to read other members journey of how they came upon being in their current business. If you haven't written your story yet, no worries, you've got until midnight on Halloween to do so!

34 years in real estate seems like a long time some days and others not so much! I didn't begin my career path in real estate and who knows if that's where I'll end up! So many fun things to do and see and that's the beauty of a journey...

After college I was offered a position as County Extension Agent in Vail Colorado. (Come on - what 20 something doesn't want to live in ski country and have a 'real' job!!) I jumped at the chance! Honestly why they decided to hire me, I don't know as I had zero experience with ranchers and farms!  My job included growing and managing the 4H clubs, community outreach, county fair assistant manager and much more. It was a blast! I grew the 4H members from 100 to 400 kids and 20 to 100 adult volunteers. The county fair grew from 3 days to 5 days with about 10,000 attendees. There was never a dull day in those days! Always something going on - or rather more like 20 things going on at once - and lots of kids and adults!

I learned so much in those years... from rounding up cattle (I know kind of odd isn't it) to teaching tennis, skiing and racquetball to adults and kids as well as many other subjects. I even had a monthly column in the Vail paper. I also did a lot of traveling around Colorado and the U.S. to promote the programs and take the kids to camps, conferences etc. All in all it was a great precursor to my first passion, real estate. I used to read real estate books constantly in college and bought my first fixer upper as well. I knew at some point real estate would be my 'real' career.

I didn't go into real estate right after I moved from CO to AZ. I spent several years as a interior decorator in a country club area with some pretty particular folks. That taught me a lot about selling and assisting clients in the best way possible. This is when I learned there were many 'solutions' to what people wanted in their homes. One of my favorite things to say to clients was - well let's play with some more ideas and I'm sure the right one will pop up!And it always did with patience...

Why did I get into design?  My mom was a fabulous designer so she allowed me at a very young age to do whatever I wanted in my room and the kids family room.  Some of the ideas I came up with were not that great at that age!! But I remember Mom telling me, there isn't anything you can't make look better with fresh paint and colors! She taught me to explore design and just have fun with it. One of my design clients was a real estate agent and that's how I got re-interested in real estate. I was fortunate to get my license very quickly and I went to work for a real estate broker in the same design business area for about 5 years. He was a great broker and mentor and a true business man.  That is when I learned how to treat people extremely well, make sure they're completely happy and make it right - always. They'll come back to you time and time again he said, and he was spot on with that advice.

I then moved to the Phoenix area to be closer to my parents as they had purchased a home in Phoenix, and they were getting older. I found a small local real estate company to work for and the 2 broker/owners were awesome. At first it was a struggle as Phoenix was such a HUGE town compared to where I had come from. That first year I spent many an hour drawing out a map of where I'd be showing homes in a large map book. Remember those, quite different from today!  I did NOT want to get lost or NOT know where I was taking my clients! I was fairly successful that first year, thankfully. Those days seem like it was another life time! Challenging and yet very fun and exiting as well!

And here I am 34 years later! Still enjoying real estate!

Hello Anna - I enjoyed this post and how you eventually transitioned to real estate.  The skills we learn and display have a way of being quite "appealing" as we master them. Good job.

Hi Michelle Carr Crowe,Altas Just Call...408-252-8900! that little saying came in handy when clients were deciding on colors, wall papers, furniture etc etc etc. So much to chose from and it could be mind boggling to some.

That's a fascinating life story you have, Anna.  Your mother was braver than mine was.  The most experimentation I got to do with decor, was to paint lipstick on my big sister's black and white graduation photo.  I was about 5 at the time, and I denied it was me who had done it!

Well, I just love this post and learning more about your time in Colorado. What a fun job and I can see that it did prepare you for your real estate agent extraordinaire job.  Your mom sure was a smart woman too - she paved the way for you, encouraging your creativity and confidence.

OMG, while I knew most of this, Anna, I'm totally sad that I forgot about your design days. Sick or not, I would have asked you a few design questions when you & Gary stayed at my home! LOL

I always find it so interesting to read the paths that each of us took to get here. These paths all contributed to making us who we are today. I would never want to go back and change anything, for it could very well be the most integral part to who we are today - whether we realize it or not!

Happy Saturday Doll!

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD it sure did prepare me well but I didn't realize that until years later. It was quite the job to manage so many programs and events basically all year round. Great opportunity. She was a very fun lady and you would have loved her sense of humor!

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS your home is so beautiful and doesn't need a thing! But I do love design so always enjoy  tossing around ideas just for fun. It has been very intersting to read so many rainers paths!  I've learned a lot from them! As for changing anything - nope! It's all good!  Enjoy your weekend!

You have a very interesting background.  You must have learned early on to be a great multi-tasker, a great real estate quality, and the interior design work must serve you and your clients well too.

Hi Raymond Henson I never thought of myself as a muti - tasker but apparently I'm good at it!! I think of it as very organized and prepared in advance and able to shift on a dime when needed without skipping a beat. That's a multi-tasker? The design part has come in handly all my life as I've designed more than homes. Have had a lot of designing events large and small. Thanks for stopping by today!
