Have You Ever Thought About Your Roof’s Deck?

Have you ever truly thought about your roof’s deck and how important it is to your home? In Norman and Oklahoma City Oklahoma, in particular, we have been seeing many roof decks that are not up to Oklahoma State code. The reason these homes are not up to code is the plank decking they are decked with.

How To Get Your Home Up To Code

I would say here at All Out Roofing we have been seeing as many as 45% of the homes we are roofing needing a new deck to be up to code for the state of Oklahoma. If you are in the middle of or going to be in a re-roofing project in the near future, you need to make sure your home is up to code with your roof.

If you are not up to code and you have an insurance claim working on your roof, your insurance company will be responsible for bringing you up to code. There is one catch if you do not have a policy with code upgrade you will not be able to get the insurance company to pay for it. Most policies do have code upgrades, but you should get your policy out and give it a fresh read. It is always a good idea to go over your homeowner’s policy every couple of years anyway.

What Is The Difference In One Roof To Another?

Some of the reasons a plank deck can and usually is problematic are gaps in the boards, and knots in the wood. These are just two potential problems. The gaps in between the boards not only can but will allow roofing nails to blow through the shingle during the roof install and this will most likely lead to a future roof leak.

In many cases, knots in the plank boards will also allow nails to blow through the shingle and crate a potential roof leak. In most cases, once the roofing felt is laid over the roof deck you can’t feel these things as they happen. You certainly can’t see where to place the nail once the felt is rolled out and nailed to the deck.

Conclusion

The take away from this article should be even if your insurance company does not pay for the code upgrade, to protect your home from future roof leaks you should go ahead and find a way to pay for the upgrade and make that happen.

Makes a lot of sense to me. It seems it could become a real issue when trying to sell your house and the deck is not up to code. How would you even know that?
