Home Wiring Doesn't Need To Be Scary (or Shocking)

Wiring is one of those things you want to "get right" in your home. Most people are wise enough to let the professionals do the electrical work but there are some do-it-yourselfers who are daring enough to do their own electrical work as well. That's fine... as long as you let the City Electrical Inspector take a look.

John O. French is an electrical inspector for the City of Minot and he wants to help you get it right as well. He would be happy to take a look at your plan and let you know what will and won't work. Everybody wants a safe home, especially John.

Minot Today is broadcast over the air on two Minot radio stations every Friday. You can find it on 106.9 FM at 12:15 (Noonish) and again at 4:45 on 1320 AM. Of course I always post the broadcast as a Podcast here as well as my Podcast site at Pod-O-Matic.

Electrical work is one of the things in the home that will kill you if you don't know what you are doing so it is good to know your limits James Dray .

Barbara Todaro I have had some formal electrical training so I do mess with it BUT the number one rule I live by is don't touch anything until you know the circut is dead. There is no danger in replacing an outlet or light fixture if you have pulled the fuse or tripped the breaker to that outlet or fixture. Once the repair is accomplished you replace the fuse or flip the breaker and look to see if the sparks fly.

Nina Hollander unless they have some training/experience I don't recommend it either.

You are a wise man Wayne Martin . I have done quite a bit of wiring but I wouldn't think of doing anything major.

John was fun to visit with Kat Palmiotti .  If you are going to mess with something that can kill you it's best to know how to master it first.

I've been hit with 110 a few times and it's not so bad but the 220 is dangerous enough that I don't mess with it Will Hamm . I've wired two homes and two garages, both were inspected and approved by State inspectors. I admit I had to make a few corrections but they always passes in the end.

I would like to thank all for the positive feedback. it is so inportant when passing a property out to another to be able to feel free to say it is up to code with qualified contractors, and inspections on all known work done to the home. anything that can be said about a property that sets it apart from others even in a small way, is still a statment. and it must not only be true but have substance. it only takes one wire or one bad connection to start a fire. And granted we never know at the end who changed somthing? but more documentation and efforts as well as permits on file, will add to the product at hand. like selling a car with all maintenance records for oil changes , brakes, fan belts,ect... all properties have value.
