Charles Edgar Duryea was born in Canton, Illinois back in 1861 to George and Melvina. I don’t have any information about his childhood, but what I can tell you is that Charles and his brother Frank built bicycles. What Charles and Frank are famous for happened on September 21, 1893, more on that in a moment.
He died in Philadelphia in 1938, he was 76. During his lifetime, he was involved in a lot of firsts, so let’s get to it. In 1893, he road-tested the first-ever working American gasoline-powered automobile. In 1895, one of his vehicles won America’s first car race, beating out Mercedes Benz vehicles from Germany. In 1896, Charles and his brother frank produced 13 cars by hand, making them the first-ever commercially produced vehicle and the largest automobile factory in the United States. The Duryea car was the first vehicle to be in auto accident in New York City.
