An Unstaged Life

An Unstaged Life

There are people I’ve known who knew early on what they wanted to be...what career they wanted. I was not one of them.

After getting my Masters in Clinical Psychology, I did psychological testing for a former professor. The majority of people I tested had been released from prison and it was eye-opening for someone fresh out of 6 years of a shelteredtalent tree

college life. But I knew that this wasn’t a long-term career for me.  I needed to be out in the real world, so I wasn’t ready to go back for a Ph.D.

I went to an employment agency. They didn’t know what to do with me so they hired me as a personnel consultant. When I began, I thought that if it didn’t work out, I could find a job in Human Resources.

As it turned out, I loved what I did! I loved finding people jobs and finding companies employees. I even loved being on commission! My strength was in getting the clients (companies like major oil companies, law firms, and financial institutions) It was a bit like those of you who focus on listings!

I would still be doing that but Larry’s job took us to Florida and to Northern VA. during that time I placed Nannies and housekeepers and did business development for a healthcare-related company.

One day when Larry and I were househunting in Northern VA, I was appalled at how some of the properties were presented.  Who shows a house like this???

I started talking about all of the things I would do to the house to make it show better. As it turned out, Larry had heard of a thing called Staging, and suggested I look into it.

As they say, the rest is history.

What runs through my unstaged life is the desire and ability to work with people. I have learned that my strength lies in being able to read people well and I’m very rarely wrong.

How has this helped me in staging? My consultations aren’t just about talking to sellers about paint and editing their furnishings. It’s also about working with them when one wants to move and the other doesn’t; or helping them understand just why it’s so important to style their home for buyers.

My unstaged life has turned out pretty well!!!

What a nice look at your past  that has led you to your present career. Interesting that your husband was so astute and helped you find your "stage"

Also that Jeff Dowler, CRS created this challenge and turns out you have so much in common from the past! Small World isnt it?

Hi Kathy Streib, those of us who studied psychology are always analyzing people, it really is a good training to have, especially in a business that deals with people. I love the title of this post, very clever.

The smarter we work, the luckier you get.

Whether we know exactly what we want or not, all of us have a bit of the "unstaged life." Thank you for sharing, it is always interesting finding out how people get to where they are!

Lovely story, Kathy!  One knows not where the wind will blow them but being ready for anything sure helps.  In your case you changed COMPLETELY what you had been doing, except as you say for the one on one consultations that must occur before you can stage.  CONGRATS

Endre Barath, Jr. glad to see you back here!!! Had I pursued my PhD, I suppose I'd have followed Skinner. I'm more of a behaviorist.

Debra Leisek you know, I am always pleasantly surprised at how small the world is.

James Dray if that's you, I hope so.

Sharon Tara one of the ladies in marketing at his homebuilding company told him of it. As it turned out, I ended up driving into DC with her relative to take the Home Staging Course.

Hi Kathy,
It's interesting how our lives take their twists and turns, isn't it?  I've been gone most of the month but better check out Jeff's contest. I don't have much time, though.

Wow Kathy, this is very interesting. Not all stagers are the same. A really good stager (as it sounds like you are) can be such an asset to a Real Estate professional.
