An Unstaged Life
There are people I’ve known who knew early on what they wanted to be...what career they wanted. I was not one of them.
After getting my Masters in Clinical Psychology, I did psychological testing for a former professor. The majority of people I tested had been released from prison and it was eye-opening for someone fresh out of 6 years of a sheltered
college life. But I knew that this wasn’t a long-term career for me. I needed to be out in the real world, so I wasn’t ready to go back for a Ph.D.
I went to an employment agency. They didn’t know what to do with me so they hired me as a personnel consultant. When I began, I thought that if it didn’t work out, I could find a job in Human Resources.
As it turned out, I loved what I did! I loved finding people jobs and finding companies employees. I even loved being on commission! My strength was in getting the clients (companies like major oil companies, law firms, and financial institutions) It was a bit like those of you who focus on listings!
I would still be doing that but Larry’s job took us to Florida and to Northern VA. during that time I placed Nannies and housekeepers and did business development for a healthcare-related company.
One day when Larry and I were househunting in Northern VA, I was appalled at how some of the properties were presented. Who shows a house like this???
I started talking about all of the things I would do to the house to make it show better. As it turned out, Larry had heard of a thing called Staging, and suggested I look into it.
As they say, the rest is history.
What runs through my unstaged life is the desire and ability to work with people. I have learned that my strength lies in being able to read people well and I’m very rarely wrong.
How has this helped me in staging? My consultations aren’t just about talking to sellers about paint and editing their furnishings. It’s also about working with them when one wants to move and the other doesn’t; or helping them understand just why it’s so important to style their home for buyers.
My unstaged life has turned out pretty well!!!
