Fry's executives predict the opening of the store at 125 E. Washington St. will have a butterfly effect on the entire community, not only giving downtown residents the convenience of walking or using public transit to get groceries, but also giving residents farther out more reasons to come downtown in the first place.
"I think it's a game changer," Fry's store president Monica Garnes said. "When I think about when you move anywhere, you always think about, 'Where is my Fry's or where is my local grocery store?' So now, the residents already in downtown Phoenix have a convenient grocery store right at their fingertips."
The store is not just bringing fresh produce to the downtown area, Garnes said, it's also creating 250 jobs.
"It's going to spur more development in the city, to be quite honest, with more apartments, more condos," Garnes said. "They have now the cornerstone that really brings a community together."
