Saturday I drove to Stamford Connecticut with my Margie to meet and adopt DD Beth. DD was in rescue after one of her owners died and the other went into assisted living where dogs were not permitted. DD is 13. I can't imagine the hurt and confusion she was and is feeling. I lost my Billy the Kid, in July at 12 and I was and am still devastated. So I thought since I can no longer help Billy I could honor him by saving another. When I saw DD, aka Diamond online I knew she was the one.
I like DD better than Diamond and so DD became a part of my family on Saturday and I added Beth to recognize Billy. DD has been doing OK. She was groomed yesterday and I think the other three were relieved while she was gone. When she returned I think the gang recognized she was here for good. DD was never with more than one dog (and then only in a foster home). Adjustments take time. She barks at the others and the boys are afraid of her despite the fact that she is but 10 pounds and the smallest of my group. She follows me everywhere and this morning walked on me in bed to get my attention. I think she is feeling a little more comfortable and I believe the others are getting used to her. I hope that we continue to bond and she feels secure. I can't replace her long time owners, and she is not a replacement for Billy. I do however feel that we can help one another heal and that is a bond that matters.
