Kate Milligan Evans was born in Abingdon, Berkshire. England back in 1857. In 1862, her family moved from England to New Zealand. She attended the Auckland College and Grammar School. She continued her education at the University of New Zealand graduating in 1877 with a Bachelor of Arts.
She was the founding principal for the Nelson College for Girls in 1883. She married in 1890 and resigned shortly afterward.
What you may not know about Kate Evans Edger is that she was the first woman in New Zealand to get a university degree. She died in 1935. In 2017, she was chosen as one of the Royal Society of New Zealand’s “150 Women in 150 Words” project.
