I Am Grateful

For Those Baby Steps

I Am Grateful For Those Baby Steps  I have appreciated the importance of baby steps for a long time.  At an early age, the story of The Tortoise And The Hare took on a life form of its own as the story found many parallels in life.

Like, the fable, I believe that effort, diligence and perseverance are excellent qualities. In all aspects of life.  As an almost teenager I remember the first moon landing and those now famous words of moving forward in a giant leap.  Once again, baby steps were a part of the process, weren't they?

Examples of baby steps have played a role throughout my life but none so vividly remembered until December, 2017.  As I have previously shared(I apologize for being redundant), just before Christmas that year and days after my final real estate closing for the year, I had a stroke.  I spent the holiday at UCLA Ronald Reagan Hospital.  From there, I began the following year at California Rehab Institute in Century City.  I knew how important baby steps(literally and figuratively) were as part of my recovery process.  I distinctly remember telling staff members when asked:  "What would you like?".  My answer each time "I want to leave".

I mean no disrespect to those who leave with the assistance of a wheelchair, a walker or a cane but I was determined to make it on my own two feet once I left that facility.  I was determined to be a good patient.  I attempted to master physical therapy.  Occupational and speech therapies were a part of the rehabilitation.   Although, far from perfect, I hope I succeeded as a model patient even though mastery was not part of the scenario. Each stroke is different as is each person.   Eventually, I was released.

Home life was much different than life before.  It was definitely not "back to normal".  For example, short walks around the neighborhood were tiresome and fatigue was a part of daily life but I knew hard work and determination would help me improve.  I became stronger and the walks increased in distance and time.  Other improvements followed and continue to this day.

Life is a work-in-progress as I have said many times.  It's a step-by-step process and one that will likely continu for a lifetime.  And it all starts with baby steps...

Michael Jacobs ~ MJ..... You've been an amazing friend throughout the years and I have enjoyed having lunch and getting to know you better on a personal level. Your bright optimistic outlook is refreshing, to say the least "and" it is an outlook I cherish. When we are able to come from a place of gratitude "life becomes a little sweeter/enjoyable." Thanks for the update and thanks for the encouragement! I'm glad you're doing better and I know "with an outlook of gratitude" life is best!

We've had felt that this year as we changed some of the processes my team and I use in every day work.  Sometimes it is hard to adopt something new, but take it slow and you'll surely become a master.

Michael Jacobs appreciate the strength it takes to recover from a stroke. Keep one foot in front of the other, do a little dancing, and know you are loved. Thank you for your beautiful inspiration

Hi Michael we were all very concerned about you for months and months.  I was ever so glad to see you take the baby step of liking posts and finally writing posts.  You had quite the journey of many baby steps this past few years. And here's to many more.....good ones!

Caroline Gerardo - thank you for the kind words. As for dancing, it wasn't a part of my personal history and I don't see that happening now.

Abby Stiller - baby steps prove important to many of us throughout life as we encounter new challenges and opportunities.

Anna Banana Kruchten CRB, GRI, WLS - so much for being in cognito, huh?

Baby steps are powerful steps as your poignant story illustrates, Michael. The energy behind them is the special fuel, which is evident in your recovery. One by one, day by day, with determination and strength - so very happy you took those initial steps. Grateful to have you in AR and we count you as one of our favorite virtual friends.

Michael, Thank you for sharing your story, sorry to hear of your experience. You have been through a lot of small steps to get to where you are today. So good that you had the help to keep you on track, and that you had the drive to keep on keepin on.

Your post makes me think of a Bruce Hornsby song....Jacob's Ladder...."All I want from tomorrow is to get it better than today, step by step".....

Michael,  I recall that time when you, once very active in the Rain, were missing.  So many of us were so concerned about you.  We knew something was up but did not know what. Just writing this bring tears of joy to my eyes knowing that you fought the fight. Your will and determination were stronger than the effects of the stroke.

Baby steps ... you are a model patient and such a good soul. I am blessed to know you.

Michael, baby steps are needed, as PT is never something that happens overnight.   Dedication and persistence will help, and know you have both!

Kathleen Daniels - I have met others who have gone through greater challenges in life, baby steps seems applicable.  This post wasn't fully developed and unwritten until I saw a young child attempting his first steps.  The analogy and this post soon followed.

Joan Cox - those two things are definitely factors.  Important factors.
