Thereasea Delerine Elder was born in Lancaster, South Carolina back in 1927. She attended West Charlotte High School. She continued her education at Johnson C. Smith University, the US Cadet Nursing Program and the Lincoln Hospital School of Nursing. After graduation, she studied pediatrics at Howard University.
She married Willie in 1948. She was certified as a public health nurse working for the Mecklenburg County Health Department until her retirement in 1989. She was active in the community and founded the Charlotte-Mecklenburg Black Historical Society and the Greenville Community Historical Society.
What you may not know about Thereasea is that she was the first African American public health nurse in Charlotte, North Carolina. She was only allowed to treat African American patients until the health department changed its policies in 1970.
