November 2019 -Thanksgiving Gratitude Challenge Debe Maxwell, CRS -

Remembering My Clients and Friends

With Appreciation

Every year, I make it a priority to send a special card out at Thanksgiving to those I think about most. Though I think about my family, clients, and friends all year long, this is the time I like to put pen to paper and express my gratitude away from electronic media.

No Excuses

There have been many years that the Christmas season overwhelms me and Christmas or holiday cards go by the wayside. There are no excuses for not remembering those dearest to you during this season of thanks.  So I made myself a commitment that I would send Thanksgiving cards out every year instead of Christmas cards.

Opening Christmas Cards Should Not Be A Chore

During those last two weeks before Christmas, opening the mail becomes a chore. Many of you may not know that my husband worked for UPS for 36 years.  So I was basically, a UPS widow during the holiday season. In fact, many of those years, I had to help plan holiday parties for his employees.

A Feeling of Guilt

Oftentimes, I have found myself opening Christmas cards and barely having enough time to scan them before moving on to the next one.  Have you ever felt guilty because you don't take the time to appreciate the thought behind the card?  I like to think about a special memory as I go through each card. The person who took the time to send me a card deserves that consideration. There were years, I had to wait until after Christmas to go back through these cards.

You may wonder do I take the time now to go through each card? I do, partly because I take the time to send my holiday cards out right now.

The Process

I start thinking about this in August, then my husband and I take a few days off and head to Scottsdale for some R and R. During that time, I visit Papyrus in Kierland Commons. I decide on a card design and have 200 of them shipped.  I make sure that this is a card of quality. A card that can be displayed and enjoyed the entire season.

In September, I start writing out each card, always adding my own words to make it special for the person I am thinking of.

The envelopes are addressed and they sit until 3 weeks before Thanksgiving. Hopefully, my clients and friends will display this card during the rest of the fall and through the holiday season.

A Special Memory

My other hope is that each time they see it, they think of a special moment we had together.

Hi, Faye schubert,

If someone feels that sending cards are too expensive that is up to them. I would hope that I could always budget a small amount to send a card to those nearest and dearest to me, even if it is just a handful.

Hi Debb Janes EcoBroker and Bernie Stea JD

Thank you. If you don't plan far enough ahead, personalizing can feel like a chore and I don't ever want that to be the case!

I keep looking at the calendar the last couple weeks.  I absolutely find it difficult to believe, that we are in November already, and will soon be staring 2020 in the face!

Hi Sheri... in about 10 days I'll be sending out some 100 Thanksgiving Day cards. But I won't think about Christmas cards until after Thanksgiving... I love sending out my Christmas greetings and love receiving them even more! And as soon as Thanksgiving is over. And as soon as Christmas is over I'll be sending out some 100 New Years Greeting cards. (I know, I know... it's a disease!)

We do not send or receive as many Christmas cards as in past years.

Family members tend to communicate on Facebook or by email.

Oh boy! 'Tis the season to fit in SO very many mailings, gift shopping, volunteering, lots of time with family & friends - I LOVE IT!

I also send Thanksgiving cards and am just wrapping those up this week. Like you, it's a long process and I love that our sphere can use the cards we send for Thanksgiving as their first cards for the holiday season...and use them throughout the season.

Gorgeous card you've created and I love that you take time away to focus on creating your special 'gift' to others for Thanksgiving.

Thanks for sharing here and participating in this month's challenge too, Sheri!

Hi Myrl Jeffcoat

Once winter is over, I always cherish springtime. I realize it is over in a blink. But like you,  I still can't believe we are at the holidays! Thank you for the feature.

Hi Grant Schneider,

Do you think we are starting a trend?  There is always so much going on near Christmas, it makes it very tough for those who are working.

Hi Nina Hollander,

It is a wonderful disease. I do send out New Year's cards and I enjoy getting Christmas cards but I feel guilty because I don't usually send them out.

Hi Roy Kelley,

I think that is a growing trend. As you know it does feel good to open a card. It is a little like opening a gift!

Hi Debe Maxwell, CRS,

Thank you!  You just reminded me of the main reason my time is at a premium during the holidays!  I volunteer also.   This year is the second year I am organizing the bell-ringing for the Salvation Army. All year long I take the calls for those in need but this time of year, most of my time is devoted to getting others to volunteer and setting up the locations around Sedona.

Hi Sheri:

It's definitely a busy time of year for mail!

I also send Thanksgiving cards, in addition to holiday cards, and I think they are particularly appreciated as they aren't lost in the piles of Christmas cards that many get. And of course the message is a focus on thanks!

Which reminds me I need to get going.

Jeff
