A Sure Sign Winter Is Coming

By

Junco Nov 8 2019For me, a sure sign that winter is on its way is the arrival of juncos to our back yard. I usually spot them closer to Thanksgiving, but today November 8th I just caught a glimpse of one feeding below our feeder.

Today we also had our first snow flurries while the sun was shinning.

And today I noticed a few squirrels are starting to get that white fur on the back of their ears.

Here in SE PA, we are waiting for an early arctic blast that will plunge us into minus freezing temps at night for a few days. Most of the country will be hit by this arctic blast. I did some last minute outdoor chores to prepare for the freeze.

Well the juncos are here until April.

We will see what Old Man Winter brings to our area this winter.

We also had a few snow flurries in our area today.

I am hoping for a nice day to visit Longwood Gardens.

Hello Gloria - I am not familiar with juncos but indications of seasonal changes certainly exist in many forms.

Michael Jacobs yes each area has its markers. I believe the Santa Ana winds pick up in your area.

Hope the smoke from the fires did not go through Pasadena or get stuck at the foothills near you.

Gloria- The juncos are one of my favorite birds. I remember well them showing up at this time of year. I love how they twitter when they are jockeying for the best food sources. A little bird with a big personality. Hope you are enjoying Fall and are ready.for winter.

Hi Gloria,
I was watching the Weather Channel yesterday and it looks like an Arctic blast is heading your way by the first of next week. Hope you and the critters can hunker down and stay warm.

We had a brief fall and then that artic blast which meant the final garden harvest and bringing in the plants we wanted to live.   Now we have "normal" winter with days getting in the 60s and nights in the 40s.  Typical Georgia winter weather.  We will have a few "cold snaps" where we go below freezing, but generally speaking those only last a day or two in our area.  Thank goodness for that.
