25 inch waist 50's ideal size girl in movie

25" waist?

Turner Classic Movies has become a favorite place for me to go after a tiring day in the real estate world.  One that I am watching now is "On the Town" which was done in 1949.  It's a musical and the female stars had short hair and longer dresses.  All of a sudden the star above came out with what had to be a 25" waistline.

And then, all of another sudden, I remembered the Home Ec class that all the girls in the tiny school that I attended were taught sewing, cooking, and all things feminine.  The teacher stressed that girls ideal waist size was 25"!  I hustled into a closet and dragged out an old picture album that I, like all kids kept back then, and found this picture with friends and me at Panama City Florida.  Short shorts!  Belted to show small waists, I assume.

So the question is, was I thinking wrong or was 25" really the desired waist size???

Hello Barbara - I don't see much of a "stretch" in thought to imagine that you enjoy TCM Turner Classic Movies based on your Searcy posts that call back memories a different time.  As for waist sizes and other numbers which might have been important, it's somewhat incredible to think how times have changed.

Michael, yes, times have certainly changed.  Could we even find a 25" waist anymore???

Sheila, then you must be very young.  Or you don't watch old movies.

I remember my mother telling me that Vera-Ellen's waist was tiny--probably closer to twenty inches than twenty-five. Such beauty standards certainly are not (and were not) healthy and led many female film stars to undertake extreme measures to get thinner.

Mr. Menefee, wonder what your mother would say about waists today?

Just last week I was viewing photos from the 1950s.  And, I couldn't help but wonder what the heck has happened to the female body these past several decades.  It is rare that we see those waistlines of earlier years, on gals today.

Yes, Myrl, things have changed.  In fact, I was planning to order something and checked their size measurements for waist, hips, etc.  Then I measured myself and found that my waist measure and my hip measure were the same!  So I decided I'd be better off to go "try before I buy."

Barbara S. Duncan - My experience with buying clothes on-line has been really bad.  It's not only that the sizing is off, but the quality of materials doesn't seem to be as good.  I am a swimmer, and what is odd, is that I can buy a particular model of swimsuit from a well known brand in the store, and it will fit fine.  But, if I buy that same swimsuit on-line, it comes with legs so large that I could fit both of my legs in just one.  It requires alteration.

Myrl, yes, buying online is certainly challenging when it comes to buying clothes.  I know that you are supposed to be able to return the items but I don't like having to go mail the package.  I was really surprised when my daughter said you can RENT clothing and return it!  Big party?  Fancy dress borrowed and then return it!!
