So Grateful for Clients Who Have Become Friends

By
Real Estate Agent with Better Homes and Gardens Real Estate-Kansas City Homes

Continuing with the November challenge of gratitude...I'm sure every agent reading this blog can relate to the headline!!

When I started in this business, I didn't even think of the possibility that clients would become friends.  Of course, when meeting a potential client for the first time, it's not something that I think of--as agents, we are thinking of how we can help with their needs and...other unspoken thoughts like: "do I feel we can work together well?  is this seller realistic about the pricess and process?  what are they not telling me that I need to pick up on?  has this buyer spoken to a lender?  will I get the business?"...you get the drift!

As the transaction rolls along, and I would sense the possibility of a friendship, I'd expand conversations beyond just the business at hand and try to get a sense of what the client was feeling. I'm happy to say many past customers are now friends that I see on a regular basis.  We get together for lunch or birthdays, a few were invited to my daughter's wedding, and many  have referred business to me.  Although grateful for all of my customers, whether they refer me to others or not, a real unexpected bonus of this career is the true friends I've made along the way.  At the beginning of every year, I look back on those people I didn't know the year before that I enjoy being with, and look ahead to wonder:  who will I meet this year that I click with?  And I'm also thankful for those people who were challenging in one way or another because I learned something from them, even if the friendship did not develop.  I appreciate having transactions when both sides are happy with how the process went.

Helping people buy and sell homes -- most times it is such an emotional experience.  I've had sleepless nights, like my buyers, wondering if our offer would be accepted.  And there's restless sleep when a listed home hasn't had any offers for several weeks...it's hard to "turn off" the job sometimes. That's all part of life though, it would be boring if every day was the same!  Every year I'm thankful for my clients--if they are also friends, that's EXTRA thanks!

Hi Mary,
That was one of the big bonuses from the job. It's like I was being paid to make friends.

Hi Mary... that's the beauty of our business... we have clients who become friends. I have one who considers me her second Mom and since her mother died a year ago, I'm really now her only Mom! When I work with repeat clients, I always say it's like havng a family reunion.
