One of the things that I love about living in Spring, TX is how accessible we are to Houston as well as Lake Conroe. Living in Spring we live between the two places.
We love to sail and keep a sail boat at Conroe Yacht Club on Lake Conroe. It is only about 35 minutes for us to get to the boat from our house. We are often tired after sailing and stop to eat on the way home. That is how we found out about Vernon's Kuntry BBQ. We would often pass it by and I was intrigued by the unique name and the unique building so we finally decided to stop. Coming out of Conroe it is on 105 on your way to the lake or of couse vice versa.
The décor is a down home country décor. There are checkered tablecloths on picnic tables with buckets of peanuts on the table and the condiments are in Bud Light six packs. You order your food at the counter and they call your name when the food is ready. There's a jute box and some video games.
At Vernon's we had our first introduction to Texas toothpicks which are shoestring onions and peppers, battered and deep fried. The quantities are quite generous. We usually order two meats and two sides and split it; of course with an order of Texas toothpicks. For meat we can choose from brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, chicken or ham. Sides include green beans, coleslaw, beans, potato salad, fried okra, french fries or a side salad. You can also choose from BBQ sandwiches, burgers, sandwiches or they have Kuntry specials.
We have not been there at lunchtime but I noticed from their menu that they have a daily lunch special. There is a different specials Monday through Friday and it is $7.00 which includes your tea and tax.
It is my understanding that prior to the present owners Vernon's use to be Vernon's One stop convenience store and tackle shop. The present owners John and Gail Rogers re-opened Vernon's back in 1994 to the Kuntry BBQ restaurant it is today. We stop on our way to the lake so don't go that often but the restaurant appears to be a big local hang out. There are lots of pictures on the wall of their regular customers. I have heard that some of the menu items are named after some of their patrons. It has even been described as akin to Cheers in the local papers.
They appear to do a big take out business. I think every time we have been in there I have seen customers coming in and ordering takeout. When you order takeout you can order by the pound, the pint or the quart.
There's also an outdoor beer garden eating area. It appears that they have some really happy squirrels. I was there for squirrel meal time which consisted of; you guessed it peanuts
I have a cute story about Vernon's. Our daughter was in the Class of 2000. The night she went to her prom we met up with some of her friends and took pictures. After that we headed to the lake. On the way there we decided to stop at Vernon's and get some barbecue. As we drove up we noticed a Rolls Royce in Vernon's parking lot. As you can tell from the outside pictures this is not the sort of thing you normally see at Vernon's. As we went in we saw some kids in their prom clothes and their parents were in there taking pictures of them. Now I have to admit being a little surprised. This is not the normal type of place you go to eat in prom clothes. Personally I would be scared that I would spill barbecue sauce all over the front of myself. Long story short Vernon's is good enough to take your prom date.
