Vernon's Kuntry BBQ on the way to Lake Conroe

By

Vernon's Kuntry BBQ on the way to Lake ConroeOne of the things that I love about living in Spring, TX is how accessible we are to Houston as well as Lake Conroe.  Living in Spring we live between the two places.

We love to sail and keep a sail boat at Conroe Yacht Club on Lake Conroe.  It is only about 35 minutes for us to get to the boat from our house.  We are often tired after sailing and stop to eat on the way home. That is how we found out about Vernon's Kuntry BBQ.  We would often pass it by and I was intrigued by the unique name and the unique building so we finally decided to stop.  Coming out of Conroe it is on 105 on your way to the lake or of couse vice versa.

The décor is a down home country décor.  There are checkered tablecloths on picnic tables with  buckets of peanuts on the table and the condiments are in Bud Light six packs.  You order your food at the counter and they call your name when the food is ready.  There's a jute box and some video games.

At Vernon's we had our first introduction to Texas toothpicks which are shoestring onions and peppers, battered and deep fried.  The quantities are quite generous.  We usually order two meats and two sides and split it; of course with an order of Texas toothpicks.  For meat we can choose from brisket, ribs, sausage, turkey, chicken or ham.  Sides include green beans, coleslaw, beans, potato salad, fried okra, french fries or a side salad.  You can also choose from BBQ sandwiches, burgers, sandwiches or they have Kuntry specials.

We have not been there at lunchtime but I noticed from their menu that they have a daily lunch special.  Vernon's Kuntry BBQ has a big take out businessThere is a different specials Monday through Friday and it is $7.00 which includes your tea and tax.

It is my understanding that prior to the present owners Vernon's use to be Vernon's One stop convenience store and tackle shop.  The present owners John and Gail Rogers re-opened Vernon's back in 1994 to the Kuntry BBQ restaurant it is today.  We stop on our way to the lake so don't go that often but the restaurant appears to be a big local hang out.  There are lots of pictures on the wall of their regular customers.  I have heard that some of the menu items are named after some of their patrons.  It has even been described as akin to Cheers in the local papers.

They appear to do a big take out business.  I think every time we have been in there I have seen customers coming in and ordering takeout.  When you order takeout you cSquirrels getting fed at Vernon's Kuntry BBQan order by the pound, the pint or the quart.

There's also an outdoor beer garden eating area.  It appears that they have some really happy squirrels.  I was there for squirrel meal time which consisted of; you guessed it peanuts

I have a cute story about Vernon's.  Our daughter waProm night at Vernon's Kuntry BBQs in the Class of 2000.  The night she went to her prom we met up with some of her friends and took pictures.  After that we headed to the lake.  On the way there we decided to stop at Vernon's and get some barbecue.  As we drove up we noticed a Rolls Royce in Vernon's parking lot.  As you can tell from the outside pictures this is not the sort of thing you normally see at Vernon's.  As we went in we saw some kids in their prom clothes and their parents were in there taking pictures of them.  Now I have to admit being a little surprised.  This is not the normal type of place you go to eat in prom clothes.  Personally I would be scared that I would spill barbecue sauce all over the front of myself.  Long story short Vernon's is good enough to take your prom date.

Beautiful place to eat as you described it Marchel. I love shoestring onions. That limo at the prom was sure a change of pace. Great BBQ writeup!

LOL>.. Marcell I ned to get a prom date and roll on over to Vernon's.  I have heard that Texas has some OUTSTANDING BBQ.  If I can find a way to becoming a traveling realtor and food critique that would be one of my first stops!

Hi Marchel,
Do you eat N C barbecue when you lived here?  We have Eastern NC barbecue and Western NC barbecue, very different.
I don't think I would have been very happy about a prom date taking me to a barbecue joint!  LOL.

RICKI, Our daughter went to the Glass Menagerie in The Woodlands that night.  I must admit I was surpised to see the dates at Vernon's.  It is one of those things that has stuck in my memory.  When I think of Vernon's I now think of proms; our daughters included.

GARY, We LOVE those Texas toothpicks.  I love dipping them in ranch dressing.  They were new to us and I don't see them on many menus but when I do I now order them.

KIMBERLY, You will find very friendly people at Vernon's for that prom date.  On top of that you will have some great Texas barbecue.

CYNTHIA, We did have barbecue when we were in North Carolina.  It was good but not quite what we were use to in barbecue.  Does you area put the coleslaw on the sandiwich?  I don't like slaw so that did not go over well with me (lol).  AR has been funky today; hasn't it.  I pulled a muscle in my leg so have been sitting around all day with my leg up and it was interesting trying to write this post.

SONDRA, That was the cutest fat black squirrel that was eating there.  He was not scared of me.  I was practically on top of him before he decided to run.

DEBRA, Maybe one of these days you can go sailing with us and we can eat at Vernon's afterwards.  That is once your head comes up from this competition (lol).

Marchel - What a lovely local piece.  It sounds like you live in a great place.  After reading your post I had this sudden desire for some barbecue.

Hi Marchel... YUM!  I have actually heard of this place before but you made it sound even better!  Whose idea was a BBQ contest when I am dieting???  Darn it!

Marchel... as a displaced southerner I can tell you any BBQ joint that has rolls of paper towels and buckets of peanuts on the tables can't be anything but good.  Thanks for making my mouth water!

JENNIFER, We do live in a GREAT place.  Funny thing was we did not want to come here but we love it!!

STEVE, You can blame that one on Liz.  I'm not sure that barbecue and dieting go hand in hand.

JESSE, You can't beat peanuts on the table with paper towels.  You didn't mention the bud light condiement containers though.

TERI, It is a fun place to go; especially after a long day at the lake.

That would definitely be a date to remember. Probably had just as much fun and I'm sure the food was good. Who doesn't like BBQ?

Marchel - You need to come join The Texas Birthday Club. I see Lone Star and Texas Real Estate are showing as a 'feature'. Yea!

KATHLEEN, I like those small restaurants also.  They just have an ambiance you can't get anywhere else.

LIZ, That would be fun to hook up at Vernon's but it is a long way from Katy.

CARL & CEIL, I do love BBQ; especially our western BBQ.  I will have to check your birthday club out but I wasn't thrilled when Plaxo sent my birthday out to everyone I knew.

Crystal, we keep our sail boat at Conroe Yacht Club at the end of Walden so often stop at Vernon's on the way back home so we don't have to cook.  I have not made it there for lunch.  I loved the guys and gals in their prom attire.  Not exactly where you expect them to stop.  Now that I have written this post I have been wondering if it might have been the kids of one of the owners.  The prom would have been in 2000.
