Last night the planning commission of the City of Greenfield held a meeting. Part of the meeting was to discuss the proposed development of "The Grove"....a 92 unit senior apartment complex on 12 Acres that wound thru an area of single family residences. Traffic, noise, the destruction of woods and homes to wildlife would be the result of this development. In addition...the surrounding homes from three communities and 2 counties would, we believe, see a depreciation in the value of their homes as a result of this development.
Neighbors did not see this as the "highest and best use" of this land. Our subdivision backs up to this area and we of course had concerns though the building itself would not be in the community in which we live, we had to reach into another city...another county to caution neighbors. Reach we did...calls. emails and letters to elected city officials. A first class mailing to hundreds of residents in the communities of New Berlin, Greenfield and Hales Corners.
Twenty four hours before the planning commission meeting, the Developer requested an extension to present more details of his plan and was not present at the meeting. However...there were 32 people from all three communities who were at the meeting. The Mayor polled those in attendance...not one person favored the development...no one on the Planning commission, including the Mayor, favored the proposed development...and further action was delayed for a minimum of 60 days. The truth be known...anyone has a right to make a proposal...to pay the fees and present a plan within the guidelines that the city provides...presentation does not mean acceptance...voices matter.
The Mayor reported that he and others had received numerous very polite emails urging rejection of the plan. The Mayor took the time to meet with concerned citizens after the meeting and thanked them for their involvement. The people in attendance thanked us warmly for helping to raise their voices...there had been numerous phone calls and emails all week from people who expressed their appreciation to us for taking action ....our purple envelope mailing list has grown longer as a result !
No final decisions were made...that is months away. The people's voices were heard...and we believe listened to by the people who will ultimately make the decision to approve or disprove this development. Did it matter ? Oh YES...the fat lady hasn't sung and we believe the actions taken by the residents has and will continue to make a difference.
The echo of "Thank you for showing us you care and helping us be the voice of the people" was expressed many times...warm handshakes and smiles...sighs of relief for now...nothing could have felt any better.
Be a part of a solution....Raise your voice constructively....do your homework...and know that the organization and you spend can promote greater good of the community.
You will never know the difference you can make if you don't try...in a community...an organization...in the lives of many people..you DO matter...your voice can be heard...Raise it.
