Don't Eat It!

Need a loaf of bread to stage a Kitchen?  Try this recipe, with the added bonus of the wonderful smell of Coffee - what could be better?

Java Dough
This is an easy to make sculpting dough that smells like coffee! It bakes to a wonderful antique tan color.

¼ C instant coffee
¾ C warm water
2 C flour
½ C Salt

Mix the water and instant coffee together until the instant coffee is dissolved. Mix flour and salt together in a medium bowl. Add mixed coffee solution to flour mixture and stir until a smooth dough is formed.

Shape dough into a loaf, buns, braid and bake them at 275 degrees for 45-90 minutes or until hard(depending on thickness)

For a nice sheen to them you can brush with a mixture of egg and water before baking.

*Also a fun dough to make with the kids, and shape into letters, beads, snowmen etc.. Bake for 30-45 minutes

This is one of the best staging tips around. It is also a great way to get the kids involved...sounds easy enough. I am going to make a couple today then see how long they last...or you could just tell me Alyse? What a great, great idea.

Can I use fresh ground coffee beans instead of instant coffee?

Sheron - I suppose you could just use 3/4 cup of strong coffee. - the instant works because it disolves completely.  If you make coffee out of the beans and don't just add them.  You wouldn't want chunks of bean in the dough.

I went and bought instant coffee just for this recipe. Will let you know how it turns out. I think this is the best tip ever! If I enjoy making it and it really rises...who knows? A new business.

Alyse, this will save us time in the morning too...coffee and toast all in one. Bet it would make the house smell delicious too.

Sue:  Trust me, you don't want to eat this stuff!! LOL.... way too salty!

Sheron:  The dough doesn't rise -  it's going to make a dense dough, much like cookie dough, or play dough, and you shape it into the loaf and bake it until it's rock hard.

This sounds cool.  How long do they last?  Should they be sprayed with a finish?

Thanks for sharing!
